Wout Van Aert (born September 15, 1994 in Herentals ) is a Belgian cyclist who competes in cyclocross and road races .
Career
Van Aert won the silver medal in the junior class at the world championships in cyclocross in 2012 and took third place in the U23 class a year later. In 2014 he became world and European champion in this class. In the same year he also won the Duinencross Koksijde , with which he won his first World Cup race in the elite class. On January 31, 2016, he was elite world champion in cyclocross in Zolder , Belgium, ahead of the Dutchman Lars van der Haar and his compatriot Kevin Pauwels . He repeated this success in 2017 and 2018.
Van Aert contested the 2018 road season with the aim of being successful in the classics . He was third in the Strade Bianche , tenth in Gent-Wevelgem and ninth in the Tour of Flanders . His debut at Paris-Roubaix , which he finished 13th, was overshadowed by the death of his team-mate Michael Goolaerts .
After his road team Vérandas Willems-Crelan merged with the Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij team for the 2019 season , he left this despite an ongoing contract, which was released to him by the Union Cycliste Internationale . Between the parties involved, this question remained the subject of a legal dispute before a Belgian court, in which team manager Nick Nuyens sued a labor court in Mechelen for damages amounting to 1,150,000 euros. The lawsuit was dismissed in November 2019.
Van Aert joined the UCI WorldTeam Jumbo-Visma . In his first season for Jumbo-Visma, he was sixth in the classics of Milan-San Remo , 14th on the Tour of Flanders and 22nd in Paris-Roubaix . He won an individual time trial and a mass start stage in the sprint at the Critérium du Dauphiné and thus his first races in the UCI WorldTour . On his Tour de France debut , he was sprint winner of the 10th stage , but had to give up the tour after a fall in the individual time trial, the 13th stage .
After an attack by a top group of five 13 kilometers from the finish, Van Aert won the Strade Bianche WorldTour race, which was postponed to summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic . A week later he won one of the monuments of cycling for the first time with the postponed Milan – Sanremo event .
