The Paris – Roubaix 2019 cycle race was the 117th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 14, 2019.
Race course
The race ran over 257 kilometers from Compiègne to Roubaix , including 29 pavé sectors (with cobblestones). There were 175 drivers from 25 teams at the start, 100 of whom were able to place.
After 84 kilometers, a leading group formed, which grew to 23 drivers in the course of the race, including the Swiss Michael Schär and Stefan Küng , the Belgian Yves Lampaert , the German Nils Politt and the Austrian Marco Haller , the Italian Matteo Trentin and the Dane Matti Breschel . In the meantime, the group had a lead of around a minute, but was swallowed up by the peloton after another 50 kilometers . After the Arenberg forest , 90 kilometers from the finish, the field still consisted of around 60 drivers.
Politt attacked 66 kilometers from the finish and was accompanied by the Belgian Philippe Gilbert and his compatriot Rüdiger Selig . The trio stayed alone at the front for a few kilometers, 50 kilometers from the finish a group with the Slovakian winner of the previous year Peter Sagan , the Belgians Yves Lampaert, Sep Vanmarcke and Wout Van Aert as well as the two French Christophe Laporte and Marc Sarreau came closer and closer. The French drivers lost touch while the remaining drivers caught up with the trio at the top. After further intermittent attacks, Nils Politt accelerated the pace 14 kilometers from the finish, and only Gilbert was able to follow him. The two drivers were able to pull out a lead of around half a minute. Together they drove into the Roubaix Velodrome , where Gilbert finally won the race ahead of Politt in a final sprint. Yves Lampaert secured third place.
