Route 2011

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 2011 was the 109th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 10th, 2011. The race was part of the UCI WorldTour .

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 258 kilometers long and led over 27 pavé sectors with a length of 51.5 kilometers. The winner Johan Vansummeren completed the race with an average speed of 42.1  km / h .

Warm, dry spring weather prevailed during the race. After the Arenberg forest , Johan Vansummeren and six other drivers approached a ten-man breakaway group. Tom Boonen and Sylvain Chavanel fell behind due to tire defects , Boonen also fell and wanted to give up, but his team management instructed him to keep driving. Vansummeren had the assignment to drive for his Garmin-Cervélo captain Thor Hushovd , who however stayed behind so that Vansummeren could drive to victory. The rest of the team kept fellow favorite Fabian Cancellara in check. With 60 kilometers to go, the leading group was 28 seconds ahead of four pursuers, who were 58 seconds ahead of the peloton , but a leading group of 21 riders formed.

Cancellara, who was in the peloton, picked up the pace on the pavé sector of Mons-en-Pévèle , so that the gap between the breakaway group and the peloton was broken up into many small groups. At the Carrefour de l'Arbre , Vansummeren drove away, Cancellara and Thor Hushovd's attempts to catch up with him came too late. Vansummeren took a small lead in the velodrome of Roubaix and won the race. With Bernhard Eisel , an Austrian placed in the top ten for the first time.

When Vansummeren received the trophy in the form of a large cobblestone, he proposed to his girlfriend. Instead of an engagement ring, he promised her the cobblestone.
