The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1913 was the 18th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, March 23rd, 1913.
The race went from Chatou over 266 kilometers. It was cold and there were sleet showers over the last few kilometers. The exact number of drivers who started is unknown; 85 racing drivers were able to place themselves, but only 24 of them took the time. The winner François Faber completed the race at an average speed of 35.33 km / h .
There was a breakaway group of seven drivers from which Faber initially dropped. But on a section that went downhill, he managed to catch up again. Charles Deruyter was leading for the last three laps of the Velodrome roubaisien , but Faber managed to intercept him on the finish line. Faber was the first Luxembourger to win this race. Two years later, in May 1915, he died as a soldier in the First World War .
At this event, the race was further “professionalized”: Since it was forbidden to exchange the bike, it was now provided with a seal under the saddle. The bicycle manufacturers, in turn, prepared the launch of their bicycles in the workshops, as it was known that a success at Paris-Roubaix would have a positive effect on sales. Companies like Peugeot or Hutchinson sent a total of seven automobiles on the route. The cyclist Antony Wattelier, on the other hand, offered to send collectors cards with a day stamp from Roubaix .
