Cyrille Van Hauwaert

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1908 was the 13th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 19, 1908.

The race went from Chatou over 271 kilometers. There were 90 racing cyclists at the start, 27 of whom were able to place. The winner Cyrille Van Hauwaert completed the race with an average speed of 25.63 kilometers per hour . In the weeks leading up to the race, the weather was very bad and the track was therefore in a catastrophic state. On the day of the race there was cold rain, snow and sleet showers .

Cyrille Van Hauwaert, who had finished second the year before, reached the Vélodrome roubaisien alone with several minutes ahead of his pursuers. There he collided with a groundskeeper. He crashed, but got back on his bike, drove the last six laps of the velodrome and won by more than three minutes over the runner-up , Georges Lorgeou . He was the first Paris-Roubaix winner to come from Belgium.
