The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1909 was the 14th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 19, 1909.
The race went from Chatou over 276 kilometers. There were 105 racing cyclists at the start, 46 of whom were able to place. The winner Octave Lapize completed the race at an average speed of 30.47 kilometers per hour .
A group of three drivers - Louis Trousselier , Jules Masselis and Octave Lapize - drove into the Vélodrome roubaisien together . The experienced trousselier put on the sprint, but to his surprise was overtaken by the 21-year-old newcomer Lapize.
The race grew in popularity and large companies were investing more and more. The insurance company La Mutuelle Automobiles used the event for an advertising campaign. The following services were offered for a monthly fee of two francs : compensation for defects on the racing bike, 2500 francs in the event of death or occupational disability, allowance for medication and 2000 francs compensation in the event of an accident caused by third parties. In the L'Auto , the brand names Dunlop and Alcyon were repeated as often as possible in the preliminary report for the race .
