The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1901 was the sixth edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 7, 1901.
The race was 280 kilometers and the drivers were driven by motorized pacemakers . 39 professional cyclists and 21 amateurs started . 21 professionals and ten amateurs reached the goal. The winner Lucien Lesna completed the race at an average speed of 25.861 kilometers per hour . At the start in Paris it was raining, when the drivers reached Roubaix, the sun was shining.
A total of 2800 Francs prize money was distributed to the best eight professionals , donated by various sponsors. The winner received 1200 francs. Since there had been repeated attempts at fraud and obstruction in the years before, more commissioners were appointed to prevent this, but this did not succeed.
In advance, the initiator of the race, Thédore Vienne , had separated from his previous advertising partner, the magazine Le Vélo , and instead decided to work with L'Auto-Vélo , whereupon Le Vélo announced that it would organize its own Paris – Roubaix . After months of public disputes, Le Vélo finally gave up their project.
