The race led from Saint-Denis , north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The route was 249 kilometers long. 158 drivers started, 72 of whom were able to place. The winner, Jean Forestier , completed the race at an average speed of 40.74 km / h .

The race day was rainy. After Jean Forestier ran away, Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet followed him half-heartedly. Since the two drivers weren't green, they didn't want to work together. After the race, Bobet criticized Coppi for his behavior, Coppi replied in his defense that he was not in shape so early in the season.
