Before the start of the race in Paris

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1900 was the fifth edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 15, 1900.

The motorized pacemaker race was 268 (or 269) kilometers from St. Germain . 23 professional cyclists started, 10 of them reached the finish. The winner Émile Bouhours completed the race at an average speed of 37.352 kilometers per hour . He was a specialist in track racing who became French standing master in 1897, 1898, 1900 and 1902 and set numerous world records.

This Paris – Roubaix event was marked by numerous falls. As pacemaker machines were motorcycles and automobiles permitted; Since a motorcycle and an automobile race were also held at the same time, there was some confusion and, as a result, accidents. For example, below the Croix de Noailles in the center of the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a collision between two motorcycles occurred, injuring 20 spectators. Among the injured was the wife of Deputy Bos, who then demanded that the entire race be canceled.

The local hero Maurice Garin reached the cycling track in Roubaix in third place and refused to drive the required six laps there: “I arrived in Roubaix, that's enough for me.” He accused his competitors of blocking his way and signed the control book , which was carried after him, "with contempt" and left the cycling track towards the city center. Despite his refusal to drive the final laps, he was classified as third.
