The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1987 was the 85th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 12, 1987.
The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the city center instead of in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux as in previous decades. The entire route was 264 kilometers long. 192 drivers started, 47 of whom were able to place. The winner Eric Vanderaerden completed the race with an average speed of 36.982 km / h .
This Paris – Roubaix event is considered to be one of the most strenuous in the history of the race. It was wet, the streets muddy and slippery. Sean Kelly crashed 25 kilometers from the finish, where most of the favorites lost time. At this point Eric Vanderaerden attacked and quickly had a lead. He broke away from the peloton and caught up with three outliers - Rudy Dhaenens , Patrick Versluys and Philippe Vandenbrande - who had been ahead for a long time. The four drivers contested the sprint together, which Vanderaerden won without any problems.
