Jürgen Muthig

Jürgen Muthig (born November 12, 1961 in Langen , Hessen) is a German university professor . He teaches technical communication and documentation at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences - Technology and Economics . Together with Robert Schäflein-Armbruster, Muthig developed the functional design method . In addition, he was Chairman of the Society for Technical Communication (tekom) from 2008 to 2016 and President of the European Association for Technical Communication (tekom Europe) from 2013 to 2017.

Jürgen Muthig studied German, history and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt and the University of Tübingen before spending a year abroad as a visiting professor at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1990 he started working as a freelance lecturer and consultant for standardization concepts in technical communication and was co-founder in 1995 and subsequently one of the two managing partners of the consulting firm Tanner Consulting. Together with his colleague Schäflein-Armbruster, he developed the functional design method , a standardization technique for technical documentation.

In 1997 Muthig was appointed to the professorship "Technical Documentation and Technical Journalism" at the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe - Technology and Economics , Faculty for Information Management and Media. Here he headed the diploma and advanced diploma courses in "Technical Editing" for eight years and is now the foreign representative and head of the internship office for the Bachelor and Master courses in Communication and Media Management (KMM). In addition, he is in charge of the part-time contact course “Technical Documentation”. His areas of expertise are standardization methods, usability engineering and classic documentation creation.

Muthig has been a member of the Society for Technical Communication (tekom) since 1990 , for which he has been active in departments and working groups. From 2008 to 2016 he was its chairman. From 2013 to 2017 he was President of the newly founded European Association for Technical Communication (tekom Europe).
