Francesco Moser (on the Tour of Flanders 1978)

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1978 was the 76th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 16, 1978.

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 263 kilometers long. 141 drivers started, 40 of whom were able to place. The winner Francesco Moser completed the race with an average speed of 36.49 km / h .

It rained during the second half of the race. Since Moser and Roger De Vlaeminck , who had won Milan – Sanremo a few weeks earlier , both drove for the Sanson-Campagnolo team , they had agreed not to attack each other at first. 23 kilometers before the finish, Moser broke away from the peloton and pulled De Vlaeminck, Freddy Maertens and Jan Raas with him. A few kilometers later, in the pavé sector of Wannehain , Moser drove away, getting ahead of De Vlaeminck and taking victory.

The Germans Dietrich Thurau and Gregor Braun were 12th and 18th.
