The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 2004 was the 102nd edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 11th, 2004.

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 261 kilometers long, 51.1 kilometers of which led over 26 pavé sectors . 177 drivers started, 93 of whom were able to place. The winner Magnus Bäckstedt completed the race with an average speed of 39.1  km / h .

At the start of the race it was sunny and dry, it was 9 degrees Celsius. The group of drivers who placed in front drove away at the last Pavé sector, Carrefour de l'Arbre, at kilometer 245. Peter Van Petegem and Johan Museeuw were in the group, but defects ruined their chances of victory. Four drivers - Backstädt, Tristan Hoffman , Roger Hammond and Fabian Cancellara - reached the velodrome together. Cancellara led at the entrance to the track, but Backstädt won the finish sprint. He was the first Swede to be successful at Paris-Roubaix .

Johan Museeuw and Peter Van Petegem crossed the finish line arm in arm in fifth and sixth. For Museeuw it was the last start at Paris – Roubaix , which ended his sporting career at the end of 2004.
