Tom Boonen (2007)

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 2005 was the 103rd edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 10th, 2005. The race was one of this year as a historical race labeled his to newly created UCI ProTour .

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 259.6 kilometers long, of which 54.7 kilometers led over 26 pavé sectors , but without the Trouée d'Arenberg . 191 drivers started, 80 of whom were able to place. The winner Tom Boonen completed the race at an average speed of 39.9  km / h .

It was raining, but it stayed dry. The wind was coming in from the front and the temperature hovered around 10 degrees Celsius. After 75 kilometers it got colder and cloudy. An eight-man breakaway group led for around 40 kilometers with a twelve-minute lead. The average speed of the race at this point was 44.2 km / h. The first pavé sector was 97.5 kilometers away. After 150 kilometers there was a serious fall in which Tom Steels and Peter Van Petegem were also involved; the two drivers then gave up. The leading group continued to have a five-minute lead as the peloton tore apart.

After 206 kilometers, at Pavé Sector 11, the breakaway group was overtaken by some pursuers. In the meantime it had started to rain. The leading group now consisted of eleven drivers: Tom Boonen , Magnus Bäckstedt , George Hincapie , Lars Michaelsen , Fabian Cancellara , Juan Antonio Flecha , Stephane Berges , Erwin Thijs , Carlos Barredo , Arnaud Coyot and Florent Brard . At Pavé Sector 4, after 150 miles, Flecha picked up the pace and only Hincapie and Boonen could keep up. The three riders reached the velodrome together, and Boonen won the sprint.

A novelty: Nine nationalities were represented in the top ten of the race, more than ever before.
