The Paris – Roubaix 2018 cycling race was the 116th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 8th, 2018. It started in Compiègne and ended after 257 kilometers on the Roubaix velodrome . In addition, the race was part of the UCI WorldTour 2018 and was the 15th of 37 races there.
The weather was warm and dry as 175 drivers from 25 teams started the race. After around 42 kilometers, the first leading group formed from Silvan Dillier , Jelle Wallays , and Sven Erik Bystrøm , Marc Soler , Gatis Smukulis , Jimmy Duquennoy , Ludovic Robeet , Geoffrey Soupe and Jay Robert Thomson , with a lead of up to 8:35 minutes drove out. On the first of 29 pavé sections, there was a mass fall in which the Swiss Stefan Küng , as it later turned out, broke his jaw. In the forest of Arenberg , 95 kilometers from the finish, the leading group disintegrated, and Mike Teunissen and Philippe Gilbert tore a gap in the field . Later the German Nils Politt was able to catch up with the chasing duo. 75 kilometers before the finish, the three riders were able to be put back into the peloton.
Reigning world champion Peter Sagan broke out of the field with 54 kilometers to go . While the riders from the breakaway group gradually fell behind, only Dillier could keep up. This duo was able to maintain its lead on the field as far as the Roubaix velodrome, where Sagan put on the sprint around 150 meters from the finish and won the race. It was his first win in this classic. Third was Niki Terpstra from the Netherlands , who had won the Tour of Flanders the week before . The best German in seventh place was Nils Politt from Hürth .
The race was overshadowed by the death of the 23-year-old Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts , who fell after about 100 kilometers. After a resuscitation, he was flown in a life-threatening condition by helicopter to the University Hospital (CHU) Lille, where he died a short time later. An autopsy revealed that he had had a heart attack before he fell.
