Jimmy Duquennoy (born June 9, 1995 in Tournai , Belgium ; † October 5, 2018 in Wez-Velvain , municipality of Brunehaut , Belgium) was a Belgian cyclist and most recently rode for the WB Aqua Protect Veranclassic team .
Athletic career
In 2014, 19-year-old Jimmy Duquennoy started his career at the Ottignies-Perwez cycling club. In August of the same year he finished 8th in the Belgian road championship. Jef Van Meirhaeghe became Belgian champion that year . At the Grand Prix Criquielion Duquennoy finished 26th.
For the 2015 season, Jimmy Duquennoy joined the Color Code-Aquality Protect team. This season, he distinguished himself by participating in numerous races and won five podium places at Belgian regional events. He also narrowly missed the "Top 10" twice with an 11th place in the Belgian road championship and 11th place at the Gooikse Pijl .
Heart attack
On October 3, 2018, Jimmy Duquennoy started at Sparkassen Münsterland GIRO in Germany, but had to stop the race prematurely. On the journey home to Belgium everything was still fine, said the sports director of his team, Frédéric Amorison , in an interview. Two days later, on the evening of October 5, 2018, the 23-year-old died of cardiac arrest in his apartment in Wez-Velvain, near the city of Tournai . Duquennoy was the second active Belgian cyclist after Michael Goolaerts to die of a heart attack in 2018. Goolaerts suffered cardiac arrest in the Paris – Roubaix race and fell. He died in the evening hours of April 8, 2018, also at the age of 23, in the Lille hospital .
