Withem Island is a small island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located off the northwestern shore of Nelson Island .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee initially incorrectly spelled it as Withen Island in 1961 and corrected it in 1990 after Nicholas Withem, captain of the US sealer Governor Brooks from Salem , Massachusetts , who operated in the waters around the South Shetland Islands between 1820 and 1821 would have.
