The 27th 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also 1000 km de Spa Francorchamps, Spa-Francorchamps , took place on May 9, 2010 in Spa-Francorchamps and was the second round of the Le Mans Series of this year.

Before the race

As in previous years, the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps was used by the works teams from Peugeot and Audi as a preparatory race for the 24 Hours of Le Mans . For Peugeot, Pedro Lamy , Sébastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud drove the 908 HDi FAP with the number 3. Franck Montagny , Stéphane Sarrazin and Nicolas Minassian were registered for the car with the number 2 . Due to health problems, Minassian could not compete on race day, so the two remaining drivers had to contest the race as a team of two in accordance with the regulations. The third Peugeot was driven by Marc Gené , Alexander Wurz and Anthony Davidson . Gené and Wurz won the Le Mans 24-hour race for Peugeot in 2009 with David Brabham as the third driver. Brabham, who had a Honda contract and drove Acura prototypes in the American Le Mans Series , was released from the races at Spa and Le Mans last year . In 2010, he was refused entry for Peugeot. That is how Anthony Davidson came into the team. A fourth 908 was used by Oreca in 2010 and driven by Olivier Panis , Nicolas Lapierre and Loïc Duval .

Also Joest Racing announced three police cars. Tom Kristensen started with his regular partners Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello in the Audi R15 TDI . Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas , both Porsche factory drivers and on loan to the Group's sister company Audi, drove the Audi with the number 9 together with Mike Rockenfeller . André Lotterer , Benoît Tréluyer and Marcel Fässler formed a new trio in the car with the number 8.

The race

Sébastien Bourdais achieved the fastest training time in the Peugeot with the number 3, who drove a time of 1: 57.884 minutes in qualifying with an average speed of 213.892 km / h. The actual race started turbulent. At the start of the warm-up lap , all vehicles had slick tires when light rain set in and surprised the drivers as they approached the Le Combes and Malmedy sections. André Lotterer, who started the race from fifth place on the grid in the Audi R15 TDI, slid off the track while warming up the tires to Le Combes and hit the piles of tires first with the rear and then with the front of the car. Olivier Panis also spun in the Oreca-Peugeot, but the car fell by the wayside and Panis was able to regain fourth place on the grid. While the race management sent the field into the 1000 km distance by means of an Indianapolis start , Lotterer in the Audi came slowly to the pits for emergency repairs.

The first accident occurred after a few meters. Pedro Lamy was in the lead in front of Olivier Panis and Allan McNish in the best Audi when it began to rain heavier in the Eau Rouge , which is why Filippo Francioni , who was driving at the bottom of the field in the Lola B09 / 80 , crashed into the tire wall after a spin when exiting the corner . The marshals recovered the wreck in such a short time that the safety car only stayed three laps on the track. On the fourth lap, immediately after the end of the safety car phase, another accident happened in the Eau Rouge. Jean-Christophe Boullion met in Lola B10 / 60 of Rebellion Racing at the curve exit the Oreca Peugoet Olivier Panis in the rear, which thereby slid off the track and struck in the safety barriers. While Boullion could continue with the Lola, Panis had to give up.

In the first two hours of the race, Allan McNish was leading the Audi ahead of the Peugeots with the numbers 2 and 3. Just before half of the race, Stéphane Sarrazin had a collision at Stavelot while lapping. With a damage to the stern, he drove back to the pits. Fortunately for the Peugeot team, the race was stopped with the red flag almost at the same time, as the power went out on the entire route. When the race resumed after a long break, the Peugeot, now driven by Franck Montagny, had only lost half a lap. The decision about overall victory was made after the final safety car phase, which was necessary after Christoffer Nygaard's accident in the Aston Martin DBR9 in Blanchimont. After the race was approved, light rain set in again and Simon Pagenaud drove Tom Kristensen up and away in the Audi. Kristensen had problems keeping the Audi on the damp track. Four minutes before the end of the race, he was overtaken by Stéphane Sarrazin in a Peugeot, who despite his accident with partner Montagny still finished second overall. Victory went to the number 3 works Peugeot, driven by Lamy, Bourdais and Pagenaud.
