Nico Verdonck

Nico Verdonck (born December 5, 1985 in Brussels ) is a Belgian racing driver .

Career

Verdonck began his motorsport career in 1998 in kart racing , in which he was active until 2002. In 2003 the young racing driver switched to the Belgian Formula Renault and immediately won the runner-up title in the series. With only one year of experience in formula racing , Verdonck switched to the international Formula 3000 championship in 2004 , which was held as part of the Formula 1 supporting program , for the Belgian Astromega team . The Belgian, who was only 18 years old, became the youngest driver in the history of Formula 3000. He achieved eighth place as the best place and was 15th in the overall standings at the end of the season, ahead of his two team-mates Jan Heylen and Olivier Tielemans . For the last race weekend he was replaced by Raffaele Giammaria .

In 2005, Verdonck found neither a cockpit in the GP2 series , the successor to Formula 3000, nor in any other racing series. However, he started as a guest driver in the Formula 3 Euro Series during the season . In 2006 the Belgian did not get a cockpit again and had to be satisfied with two outings in the Spanish Formula 3 championship. In 2007 Verdonck moved to the German Formula 3 Cup at JB Motorsport and for the first time in two years competed a full season. With a win at the end of the season, he finished third behind his team-mate and compatriot Frédéric Vervisch . In 2008 the Belgian moved to RP Motorsport in the Italian Formula 3 championship . After the season got off to a good start with two podium finishes on the first race weekend, he had to end his engagement after four race weekends because his team had left the championship.

In 2009 Verdonck turned his back on formula racing and switched to sports car racing . He started for DAMS in Formula Le Mans and won the championship title with eight victories. He also competed in two races each of the Belgian GT Championship in 2008 and 2009.
