The German Formula 3 Cup is a racing series for Formula 3 vehicles in Germany.

history

After the Second World War, monoposto racing cars with 500 cm³ motorcycle engines were mainly built in England . In 1950, the internationally valid Formula 3 was also developed for this national racing class . Since championships for miniature cars up to 500 cm³ and 750 cm³ were held in Germany as early as 1948 and 1949, it was obvious that a German championship should also be held from 1950 onwards. This lasted until 1953.

In 1960 another championship similar to Formula 3 was held, Formula Junior . This formula replaced Formula 3 at the national level, but only existed until 1963.

The new Formula 3

In 1964 a new Formula 3 class was created, based on Formula Junior. This class quickly spread throughout Europe. However, it was not until 1974 that the Polifac Trophy, a cup for Formula 3 vehicles, came into being in Germany. This won Giorgio Francia .

In 1975, the ONS created the German Racing Car Championship , which complied with the technical regulations of Formula 3. This series ran for over 25 years until 2002 and, alongside the British Formula 3 Championship, developed into one of the most prestigious in the world.

Euro series and Formula 3 Cup

For 2003, the DMSB and its French counterpart FFSA decided to hold a European championship. From 2003 the French and German series merged to form the F3 Euroseries , which mainly starts as part of the DTM . Both associations agreed not to host a national Formula 3 racing series.

The German Formula 3 Association , which hosted the German Championship until 2002, decided, among other things, because of existing contracts with suppliers, to organize its own series in 2003. For their first season, Recaro was won as the main sponsor, but has now been replaced by ATS . Due to the agreement with the FFSA, this series is not advertised by the DMSB and therefore does not receive the title German Championship .
