As the parent company of the Recaro Group, Recaro Holding owns the Recaro brand and the independently operating companies Recaro Aircraft Seating (aircraft seats) based in Schwäbisch Hall and Recaro eGaming (gaming seats) based in Stuttgart . The Recaro Automotive Seating and Recaro Kids divisions are operated by licensees.

history

Founded until 1930

  • On October 1st, 1906, the master saddler Wilhelm Reutter founded the “Stuttgarter Carosserie- u. Radfabrik ”in Augustenstrasse in Stuttgart.
  • In 1909 Wilhelm's brother Albert Reutter joined the company as part-time and commercial director. Change of name to "Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co.", owner W. & A. Reutter.
  • On July 24, 1909, the patent for a "folding top with a canopy, especially for motor vehicles" is registered. This so-called “reform body” was a constructive forerunner of the convertible. Superstructures including interior fittings are created for almost all well-known manufacturers of the time, in particular Daimler-Benz (and its predecessors) and the Chemnitz Wanderer-Werke .
  • In 1919 the gradual changeover from individual production to series production takes place .
  • 1930 Reutter enters into a partnership with the Porsche design office .

1931-1950

  • From 1931 onwards, Reutter produced the first bodies for Porsche types 7, 8, 9, 12 and 32.
  • 1936 After the capacity limit of the main plant in Augustenstrasse was reached, a second plant was built in Zuffenhausen.
  • 1937 Reutter receives the order to produce the Volkswagen prototype pre-series VW 303.
  • 1938 Development of the patent for an adjustable seat for motor vehicles.
  • 1938 Order for 30 prototypes Porsche Type 60 (later “Beetle”).
  • 1939 The company now has around 900 employees.
  • 1944 The main plant on Augustenstrasse is badly damaged in an air raid. The workforce shrinks to 94 people.
  • 1949 The company receives a major order for the production of 500 bodies including the complete interior for the Porsche 356.
  • 1950 On April 4, the first delivery of the body for the Porsche 356 from Stuttgart production takes place.

1951-1980

  • 1953 Patent for "a hinge fitting for upholstered seats with adjustable backrest", the Reutter reclining seat fitting.
  • 1954 Completion of the 5,000. Body for the Porsche 356.
  • 1956 The “Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co. GmbH” celebrates its 50th anniversary. In the same year the 10,000 leaves. Porsche body the plant, which now employs 900 people again.
  • 1963 Reutter sells the body shop with 950 employees to Porsche in December. Seat production is excluded from this; the company changes its name to RECARO GmbH (REutter-CAROsserie) and with a workforce of 250 now produces vehicle seats for Porsche, but also for other manufacturers for retrofitting.
  • 1965 Recaro presents the first Recaro sports seat at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
  • 1967 Construction of a further production facility in Schwäbisch Hall.
  • 1969 The Reutter family sells Recaro to the three companies Keiper, Huber & Wagner and Metzeler. At around the same time, preparations for the manufacture of aircraft seats will start.
  • 1971 Recaro initially produced the first aircraft seats under the name Recaro Aircomfort under license from the American manufacturer Hardman Aerospace . Shortly thereafter, Recaro launched its first aircraft seat, the so-called Recaro 2020, and sold it to Lufthansa, among others .
  • In 1974 the Recaro professional full bucket seat was the first motorsport seat to be launched.

1981-2000

  • 1983 The Keiper company takes over all Recaro shares. In the same year Keiper Recaro GmbH & Co. built the first European just-in-time plant to manufacture the seats for the Mercedes-Benz 190 in Bremen. The aircraft seat production is completely relocated to Schwäbisch Hall .
  • 1997 In the course of a restructuring, Recaro becomes an independent company again. This results in four legally and economically independent companies, including Recaro Aircraft Seating GmbH & Co. KG.
  • 1998 Recaro introduces the first child seat that grows with the child .

2000 until today

  • 2004 Recaro buys the traditional company " Storchenmühle ", which focuses on the production of child seats.
  • 2006 The company celebrates its 100th anniversary.
  • 2011 The US corporation Johnson Controls takes over the company Recaro Automotive, whereby the Recaro Group still acts as a license partner. The companies Recaro Aircraft Seating and Recaro Child Safety will remain under the umbrella of the Recaro Group.
  • 2013 After the restructuring, Recaro Holding relocates its headquarters back to Stuttgart, where it was founded
  • 2016 Recaro Automotive Seating is part of the automotive supplier Adient after its spin-off from Johnson Controls . The Recaro Group continues to act as a licensor.
  • 2018 Recaro Child Safety ceases business operations (including Storchenmühle).
  • 2018 Recaro Holding signs a global license agreement with the Artsana Group, which, after the business operations of Recaro Child Safety (including Storchenmühle) have ceased, will continue the development, production and sale of premium child seats and strollers under the brand name Recaro Kids.
  • 2018 Recaro enters the gaming market with the establishment of the Recaro eGaming division.
  • 2019 Market launch for the Recaro Exo, the first gaming seat from Recaro eGaming in May 2019.

Recaro Holding

Recaro Holding acts as the parent company of the Recaro Group and comprises the areas of strategy, finance, human resources and law as well as design, branding, communication and innovation management. The headquarters of the Recaro Holding have been in Stuttgart since May 2013.

Recaro Aircraft Seating is a developer and manufacturer of aircraft seats .

Aircraft seat production begins in 1971 under license under the name Recaro Aircomfort, initially in Stuttgart. From 1983 the entire production takes place in Schwäbisch Hall. In addition to its headquarters in Schwäbisch Hall, Recaro Aircraft Seating GmbH & Co. KG also has production plants in Poland, South Africa, the USA and China.

In 2004 Recaro Aircraft Seating took over the majority of AAT Composites in South Africa - a company that uses fiber composite materials to manufacture products for the aviation industry.

Recaro eGaming

Recaro eGaming GmbH & Co. KG, based in Stuttgart, has been part of the Recaro Group since the beginning of 2018. With the start-up of the company, Recaro is positioning itself as a supplier of premium gaming seats in the rapidly growing eSports and gaming market. The company presents the first gaming seat prototype at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne.

Recaro Automotive Seating

The area Recaro Automotive Seating as a manufacturer of car seats was on the US automotive supplier in 2011. Johnson Controls sold. From 2016 to 2020, Recaro Automotive Seating was part of the automotive supplier Adient after it spun off from Johnson Controls . In January 2020, Adient sold the business to Raven Acquisition LLC. The Recaro Group still acts as a licensor.

Recaro kids

Recaro Child Safety GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Marktleugast, which merged with the traditional company Storchenmühle in 2004 , ended its business operations on July 31, 2018. At the end of October 2018, Recaro Holding and Artsana Group signed a global license agreement. The agreement includes the development, production and sale of premium child seats and strollers under the Recaro Kids brand.
