Storchenmühle was the brand name used until 2018 for children's furniture and child car seats from Recaro Child Safety GmbH & Co.KG Marktleugast (Upper Franconia).

The married couple Irmgard and Hans-Joachim Kauffmann founded the originally independent company Storchenmühle in 1949. It was named after the name of the inn where they came up with the idea of making strollers . Initially housed in the basement of the house, the manufacture moved into its own company building in 1950; the product range was expanded to include children's clothing .

In 1979 Storchenmühle also started the production of wooden high chairs and playpens in a specially built wood factory. However, Storchenmühle owes its fame to a long tradition as a manufacturer of child car seats. In 1963, the “Nikki” model, the world's first child car seat, established its own claim to be a pioneer in this area of business. The 4-point belt system for child seats followed in 1984. The first reboard system on the German market in which the child seat is positioned against the direction of travel was presented in 1989.

In 2004, Storchenmühle GmbH & Co. KG merged with the automotive supplier Recaro and then operated under the name Recaro Child Safety with its headquarters in Marktleugast. The operational business of Storchenmühle GmbH & Co. KG has been subject to RECARO Child Safety since then, but the RECARO Child Safety company produced child seats and strollers under the RECARO brand name and Storchenmühle under the Storchenmühle brand.

The brand's logo used to show a stork with a mill. The company changed this logo to a word mark in 2006 . Later, the logo showed the words Storchenmühle in white letters against an orange background. For easier pronunciation, especially for international use, the acronym "STM" was introduced. The letters stood as an abbreviation for the Storchenmühle brand, as well as for the features "Safety", "Technology" and "Mobility". In addition to white and orange, green was also the brand's corporate color.

Florian Langenscheidt included Storchenmühle in 2006 in the book he published, German Standards - Brands of the Century .

The company ended its business operations on July 31, 2018, and Recaro Child Safety has no longer manufactured and sold products of the brand since then.
