Richie Stanaway (born November 24, 1991 in Rotorua ) is a New Zealand racing driver . In 2011, he won the German Formula 3 drivers' championship . In 2015 he started in the GP2 series and in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Career

Stanaway began his motorsport career at the age of six in motocross . At the age of twelve he switched to speedwaysport . At 14, Stanaway switched from two-wheeled vehicles to four-wheeled vehicles and began karting .

The end of 2007 changed Stanaway finally in Formula racing in the Winter Series of the New Zealand Formula First . With a podium placement, he was 14th overall. After finishing third in New Zealand's Formula First in the 2007/2008 season, he competed in the New Zealand Formula Ford winter series in 2008 . Stanaway won five races and finished the championship in third place. He also started two races in the Australian Formula Ford. In 2008/2009 he competed in the New Zealand Formula Ford and won the championship title with eleven wins ahead of Mitch Evans . In addition, he took part in some races of the Australian Formula Ford and finished sixth overall with a win. In addition, Stanaway took part in a European racing series for the first time in 2009 and took part in three ADAC Formula Masters racing weekends . With two podium finishes, he finished eighth in the drivers' championship. An investment banker made the move to Europe possible for him , who turned Stanaway's career into an investment object. What was special was that Stanaway only had to pay back the budget if it was successful.

In 2010 Stanaway was awarded a 15-year contract with Gravity Sport Management , who have been responsible for coordinating his career ever since. At the beginning of the year Stanaway first took part in two racing weekends in the Toyota Racing Series , the highest single- seater series in New Zealand. He won a race and was tenth in the drivers' championship. He then competed in the ADAC Formula Masters for ma-con Motorsport . Stanaway took part in 18 of 21 races. He won 12 races, came second in 5 races and dominated the championship. After the season, Stanaway drove in the British Formula Renault winter series and finished fifth for the Atech Grand Prix with a win. In 2011 Stanaway competed for Van Amersfoort Racing in the German Formula 3 Cup . He dominated the racing series that season. Stanaway won 13 of 18 races and only failed to finish in the first two positions in 2 races. He won the drivers' standings with 181 to 126 points ahead of Marco Sørensen . Stanaway also competed for Van Amersfoort Racing at the Macau Grand Prix . In addition, Stanaway took part in the last two race weekends of the GP3 series for Lotus ART . He managed to win his second race. He finished the overall ranking in 20th place. The missions in the GP3 series also served to better assess Stanaway's driving performance, as his management had concerns about the strength of the field of drivers in the German Formula 3 Cup and the ADAC Formula Masters. After the season, Stanaway took part in test drives of the Formula Renault 3.5 and achieved best times. He was also given the opportunity to test a DTM car for BMW .

In 2012 Stanaway received a cockpit in the Formula Renault 3.5 from Gravity - Charouz , who competed as Lotus . With a sixth place in the second race in Alcañiz , he was only rated once. An accident at the 5th of 17 races of the season in Spa-Francorchamps ended his season prematurely. In the rain, he hit Carlos Huertas , took off and finally hit the track. After the race, Stanaway said he hadn't seen Huertas. The race was interrupted to rescue Stanaway. He broke two vertebrae in the accident. The regeneration phase took a few months, so his season ended prematurely.

In 2013 Stanaway returned to motorsport and competed in GT racing . He started for DAMS in the Porsche Supercup . With a fourth place as the best result, he was twelfth in the drivers' standings, while his team-mate Michael Christensen achieved sixth place with a win. He also took part in six races of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Aston Martin Racing in 2013 . It was used in various vehicles. A second place in the GT classification was his best result. He finished the World Cup of GT drivers in 19th place. He also competed for Aston Martin in a Rolex Sports Car Series run and made a guest appearance in the British GT Championship. In 2014 , Stanaway stayed in the WEC for Aston Martin. He shared the stakes with Nicki Thiim and contested three of eight races. He finished the season in 20th place in the GT Drivers' World Cup. In the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) he took part in a race for Aston Martin. In addition, Stanaway returned to formula racing and competed in the 2014 GP3 series for Status Grand Prix . In his first race in Barcelona he was third on the podium. In Silverstone he finally won the sprint race in Mogyoród the main race. With five podium finishes, he reached eighth place overall. He also returned to Formula Renault 3.5 for two Lotus events . He represented the injured Matthieu Vaxivière and achieved a podium finish with a third place.

In 2015 Stanaway competed again for Aston Martin in the WEC. At the 6-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps , he won the GT class together with Alex MacDowall and Fernando Rees . Stanaway did not take part in a race and finished ninth in the GT World Cup. Furthermore graduated Stanaway an LMP1 test day for the Audi team Joest Racing . In addition, Stanaway competed for Status Grand Prix in the 2015 GP2 series . He achieved his first victory in the sprint race in Monte Carlo . In Sochi he won the sprint race again. He did not appear at the last two events. Stanaway finished tenth overall and was the only status rider to score points in the 2015 GP2 series.

Personal

Stanaway's parents did not have the financial means to finance him driver seats, so that he was dependent on good performance from an early age. To focus on motorsport, Stanaway dropped out of school after moving to Europe.

In 2011 Stanaway moved to Hilversum , the Netherlands, to live close to his employer .
