Mathias Lauda (born January 30, 1981 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian racing driver . Between 2006 and 2009 he drove in the DTM for Mercedes-Benz . He is a son of the three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport
Lauda is the son of three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda and his wife at the time, Marlene. He has a brother from this marriage who manages him today (Luke). As a late entrant, Lauda started his motorsport career in 2002, unlike many other racing drivers, not in kart racing , but in Formula Nissan 2000 . He also drove two races in Formula Volkswagen and one race in the Spanish Formula 3 championship . In 2003 the Austrian moved to the World Series Light , a sub-category of the World Series by Nissan , and finished eighth in the overall ranking. In 2004 Lauda took part in a number of Euro 3000 races.
In the 2004 season , the Austrian mainly focused on his involvement in Formula 3000 , which was part of the Formula 1 supporting program . As a team colleague of José María López , he started for the racing team CMS Performance, which is managed by Coloni Motorsport . Lauda, who could not keep up with his teammate, finished 13th overall at the end of the season. In 2005 , Lauda competed for Coloni Motorsport in the GP2 series , the successor to Formula 3000. He only managed to score points once and again he was unable to keep up with his team-mate Gianmaria Bruni , a former Formula 1 driver. Even after Bruni had left the team three race weekends before the end, the Austrian was unable to attract attention and at the end of the season he finished 21st in the drivers' standings
After driving in the 2005/2006 A1GP season in winter , Lauda turned his back on formula racing and switched to the DTM in 2006 . He started for Mercedes-Benz with the Persson Motorsport team . He didn't manage to get any points and finished 18th overall at the end of the season. In the 2007 season he competed for the Mücke Motorsport team in an AMG-Mercedes C-Class from the previous season . Lauda scored points for the first time in the season and finished 15th in the overall ranking at the end of the season. In 2008 Lauda returned to Persson and received another Mercedes-Benz car of the year. At the end of the season he was again 15th overall. In 2009 , Lauda switched back to Mücke, where he started again in a Mercedes-Benz car. As a team-mate of Maro Engel , he finished 15th overall at the end of the season. His contract for 2010 was not extended and so Lauda was replaced at Mücke by the former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard .
After Lauda was without a permanent racing cockpit in 2010, he drove in 2011 for the Konrad Motorsport team in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup . He finished the season with no points in 40th place overall. In 2012 he drove in the FIA GT1 World Championship for BMW Team Vita4One . With a BMW Z4 GT3 , he and Nikolaus Mayr-Melnhof achieved two podium positions and finished the season in 12th place. After a break in 2013, he drove the following year in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series . He took a victory at Tours Speedway and finished the season in ninth place.
Lauda has been driving a factory-entered Aston Martin Vantage GTE in the FIA World Endurance Championship since 2015 , which he shares with Pedro Lamy and Paul Dalla Lana.
Personal
Lauda has lived in Barcelona since 1996.
In 2005, he won the rodeo race in the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge .
