The 2005/06 A1GP season was held from September 23, 2005 to April 2, 2006 on a total of eleven racetracks. France emerged as world champion.

The 2005/2006 season was the first in the history of the A1GP series. At the opening race weekend at Brands Hatch, Team Brazil and Nelson Piquet jr. Achieve a double victory at the wheel, but subsequently France emerged as the dominant team, which with its drivers Nicolas Lapierre and Alexandre Prémat achieved a total of 13 wins (out of a possible 22) and thus won the title with ease. The runner-up went to the once victorious team Switzerland, third overall was team Great Britain. Other race winners were the teams from the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico (two times), Malaysia and the Czech Republic.

During the race weekend at the Dubai Autodrome , the so-called A1 Recovery System was used for the first and so far only time , a towing procedure in which racing cars that have had an accident or have broken down are recovered by helicopter using a 50-meter-long steel cable. A process that was also unique until the end of the series was the permission for the Italian driver Enrico Toccacelo to replace the regular Pakistani driver Adam Khan, who was injured in the back and left hand, in the races at the event in Durban , although he is not entitled to points was. The race to catch up in the Sentul main race , in which Canadian Sean McIntosh started from 23rd (and thus from last position), was also unmatched until the end . In the 2005/2006 season, the A1GP series also had its worst accident to date, when in the main race at Eastern Creek the Japanese team's car went off the track in the fast left-hand bend to the start / finish, rolled over and with it the airbox first hit a concrete wall, breaking it in two between the engine and the monocoque. The Lola - Zytek with Cooper Tires tires was used as a standard car , see A1GP cars . It proved to be reliable right from the start, but pit stops in the first part of the season often caused problems with jammed wheel nuts, which meant that well-positioned teams lost many places.

Teams

25 teams took part in the season ( see team and driver overview ), but not all of them competed continuously.

Team Indonesia stayed away from the fourth race weekend in Eastern Creek, as regular driver Ananda Mikola was in an Asian Formula 3 race, which he preferred because of his championship chances there, and a suitable replacement driver could not be found. The Pakistani team was absent from the events in Sentul and Monterrey due to a back injury to regular driver Adam Khan. Team Japan did not take part in the race weekend in Estoril because Ryō Fukuda and Hideki Noda were unable to attend due to Formula Renault 3.5 and Formula Nippon races and a replacement driver was not determined in time. In Durban it was missing again because no replacement could be found for Shimoda, whose contract had expired at this point. The team also did not compete at the last two race weekends in Laguna Seca and Shanghai . The team from India skipped the last three race weekends due to internal quarrels. Team Russia did not take part in the event at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz due to an internal restructuring . After the race weekend in Eastern Creek, it finally stopped showing up.

Two official tests were held prior to the season. They took place in Silverstone ( August 3rd / 4th ) and on the Circuit Paul Ricard ( August 24th - 26th ).

Various changes have been made to the racing calendar over time. The first published calendar contained twelve race weekends, including races on a street circuit in Singapore or Indonesia (replaced by Sentul), in Cape Town (replaced by Durban), in San Antonio / Texas and at the Goldenport Motor Park in Beijing (by Shanghai replaced) planned. The event in San Antonio was replaced by a race weekend in Curitiba (Brazil), which was however removed from the calendar during the course of the season, as the course did not have the required safety standards. In addition, the racing weekend in Sentul was originally on the 13th - scheduled on Jan. 15, 2006, but was due to the death of Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and uncle of A1GP founder Sheikh Maktoum sensationalist Maktoum Al Maktoum , the Former date of the Curitiba weekend (February 10-12, 2006) postponed. The race weekend in Laguna Seca was also about to be canceled after heavy rain had affected the track, but could finally take place as planned.

Set of rules

The race weekend consisted of three practice sessions, a qualifying, a warm-up and two races - a shorter one, the “sprint race”, and a longer one, the “main race”. The training sessions, the first two of which were held on Friday and the third on Saturday, lasted 60 minutes each. The qualifying held on Saturday consisted of four 15-minute sessions, which were separated from each other by 10-minute breaks. In each of these sessions, a driver was allowed to drive a maximum of one timed lap (he completed a total of three laps: warm-up lap, timed lap, exit lap). Of the ideally four lap times, the two best were added at the end, and the resulting time determined the starting position in the sprint race. The starting grid of the main race corresponded to the final result of the sprint race. The warm-up took place on Sunday and lasted 15 minutes. The two races, also taking place on Sunday, were each held over a certain number of laps. The sprint race was limited to 30 minutes, started on the fly and did not contain a mandatory pit stop; the main race was limited to 60 minutes, started standing and contained a mandatory pit stop that could be made at any time. The break between the end of the sprint race and the start of the main race was 60 minutes.

In both the sprint and the main race, the first ten teams received points according to the principle of 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. In addition, the team that had set the fastest lap at the end of both races received an extra point.

The prize money of one million US dollars per race weekend was divided among the top ten teams in the main race. The winner received $ 300,000, the runner-up $ 200,000 and the third $ 150,000.

In the sprint race, the PowerBoost button, which briefly increased performance by 30 hp, could be used four times, in the main race eight times. In qualifying, as in the practice sessions and in the warm-up, he was not available.

Technical driving aids such as ABS or traction control were completely forbidden. Tests with the A1GP bolide were also not permitted, apart from the official test days. Test drives with other cars on tracks on which the series would still be a guest were also prohibited during the season.

At the beginning of the season, all teams had a replacement car available in addition to the race car; this was no longer permitted from the race weekend in Sentul.
