Sheikh Maktum bin Raschid Al Maktum ( Arabic مكتوم بن راشد آل مكتوم Maktūm bin Rāschid Āl Maktūm ; * 1943 in Schindagha , Dubai ; † January 4, 2006 in Gold Coast , Australia ) was Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and from 1990 until his death Emir of Dubai.

Life

Maktum bin Raschid Al Maktum was born in 1943 as the eldest of four sons of Sheikh Raschid bin Said Al Maktum . His brothers are Sheikh Muhammad , who, in addition to his post as Defense Minister of the UAE, also succeeded Sheikh Maktum as Emir of Dubai, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE , Sheikh Hamdan (Minister of Finance and Industry) and Sheikh Ahmad.

After the independence of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971, he became its first Prime Minister and held the office until April 25, 1979 , when he resigned in favor of his father. After the death of his father on October 7, 1990, he was reappointed to the office and also took over the government in the Emirate of Dubai.

Maktum died on January 4, 2006 during a trip to Australia at the Palazzo Versace Hotel on the Gold Coast , Queensland . On the occasion of his death, a 40-day state mourning was ordered in the United Arab Emirates .
