Maktum bin Buti ( Arabic مكتوم بن بطي, DMG Maktūm ibn Buṭī ; † 1852 ) was the founder and first ruler of the sheikdom of Dubai .

He left Abu Dhabi with around 800 tribal members of the Al Bu Falasah , a branch of the Bani Yas , to settle in Dubai. Dubai, like most settlements, was a small town at the time. On June 9, 1833 , he founded the Dubai Sheikdom, which until then had belonged to Abu Dhabi. He was very young at the beginning of his tenure, but historical records show that he was brave and skillful, confidently overcoming all political and economic hurdles during the establishment of the new sheikdom. Under his rule the "Treaty of Eternal Peace at Sea" and the ban on the slave trade were concluded with the British in 1835 and 1853. So the coast got its name Trucial Coast (Armistice Coast ) and became the Protectorate Area of Great Britain . He pushed back the prevailing piracy and thus ensured a flourishing maritime trade. The pearl trade became Dubai's main source of income under his rule.

Until his death in 1852 he was one of the most respected and influential people on the armistice coast in the Persian Gulf . He was succeeded as ruler of Dubai by his brother Sheikh Said bin Buti .
