Sheikh Raschid bin Said Al Maktum ( Arabic راشد بن سعيد آل مكتوم Rāschid bin Saʿīd Āl Maktūm , DMG Rāšid b. Saʿīd Āl Maktūm ; * June 11, 1912 in Dubai ; † October 7, 1990 ibid) was the firstborn son of Sheikh Said bin Maktum and the eighth ruler of the Emirates Dubai .

He was involved in politics at a young age. His preferences were falconry and hunting . He was considered a talented marksman.

Economic projects

Sheikh Raschid recognized Dubai's economic potential. The expansion of the muddy creek into a navigable waterway, the construction of the first runway in Dubai, the Al-Maktum bridge over the creek inaugurated in 1963, the deep-sea port Port Rashid 1967–1972, the second port in Jebel Ali (a port that was 67 berths is the largest man-made port in the world), the World Trade Center and the establishment of the Jebel Ali free trade zone were some of his most important projects.

Sheikh Rashid met with the ruler of Abu Dhabi , Sheikh Zayed , in a desert camp on February 18, 1968 to discuss the establishment of a federation between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. There the two agreed on the so-called "Union Accord", which later became the cornerstone of the Federation of the United Arab Emirates .

The rulers of Abu Dhabi , Dubai, Sharjah , Ajman , Fujairah and the Crown Prince of Umm al-Qaiwain met on December 2, 1971 in his beach palace in Dubai and signed the provisional constitution of the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Raschid had four sons, Sheikh Maktum , who ruled Dubai as his successor from 1990 to 2006, Sheikh Hamdan (now Minister of Finance and Industry of the UAE and Crown Prince of Dubai), Sheikh Muhammad (10th ruler of the Emirate of Dubai and Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates) and Sheikh Ahmed .
