The A1 Team Netherlands ( English stylization: A1Team.The Netherlands ) was the Dutch national team in the A1GP series.
history
A1 Team Netherlands was founded by former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers , whose racing team Racing for Holland also equipped the team from the start.
In the first season the team was upper mediocre; it scored its first points with a seventh place in the main race at Brands Hatch through Jos Verstappen . After numerous other points, the team finally celebrated its first victory in the main race in Durban . There was a special drama inherent in this success, as Verstappen had already fought for victory in the sprint race, but collided with the leading French team at the end of the back straight when attempting to overtake them on the last lap and was eliminated. In the main race, coming from starting position 16, he made up position by position and on the last lap was again in an attack position on the now leading Swiss team , which he finally passed on the back straight with an overtaking maneuver very similar to the first. Despite the fact that Neel Jani was struggling with technical problems at the time, this maneuver was crowned “Overtaking Maneuver of the Year” in the A1GP series at the end of the season. Another highlight of the season was the second place in the main race in Monterrey . Verstappen made another memorable appearance in Laguna Seca when he parked his car at the pits after two drive-through penalties in the main race and stormed away in a rage. The team finished the season in seventh place with 69 points.
In the following season , the team was able to record a slight increase. In the main race of the opening weekend in Zandvoort , home , with Jeroen Bleekemolen at the wheel , it was in the lead for a long time, but fell back to fourth place due to a risky tire strategy, which did not detract from the cheers of the Dutch fans. The team clinched its first win of the season in the sprint race in Beijing , while Bleekemolen retired from the main race due to a driving error while in the lead. Numerous point results followed in the further course; it ended the season in fifth place overall with 57 points.
The third season was similar for the team. With a third place in the sprint race in Zandvoort and a second place in the main race in Brno , it was able to achieve two podium positions, plus 14 other results in the points. The team ended the season in seventh overall position with 87 points.
The fourth season was the best of the team. After a second place in the sprint race in Chengdu and a third in the sprint race in Taupo , both with Robert Doornbos at the wheel, followed by Bleekemolen in the sprint race in Kyalami by Bleekemolen. Another victory in the Portimão sprint race by Doornbos and a second place in the main race at Brands Hatch, achieved by Bleekemolen, meant fourth overall with 75 points, which does not include another six points due to the cancellation rule.
A1 Team Netherlands took part in all 39 race weekends of the A1GP series.
