Jonathan Ross "Jonny" Reid (born October 18, 1983 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand racing driver .

Career

Reid started karting at the age of nine . From 1996 to 2000 he was New Zealand kart champion, each time in a different category, and in 2001 he reached third place overall in the Australian championship. After gaining initial experience in the series in the winter of 2001/2002, he competed again in New Zealand's Formula Ford in 2002/2003 and won the championship, where he also triumphed at the time-honored "New Zealand Grand Prix". The final step into the monoposto sport took place in 2003 in the form of a change to the Australian Formula 4000 Holden . He finished this series with five race wins in second place; this was followed by a one-off appearance at the Australian V8 Supercars in Bathurst .

In 2004 Reid rose to the Superfund Euro Formula 3000 Championship and, starting for JVA Motorsport , was fourth overall and “Newbie of the Year” with a win in Donington Park and four other podium finishes. Subsequently, he received the prestigious Bruce McLaren trophy in the category “Most Deserving Driver in the Commonwealth ”. At the end of the year he completed a Formula 3000 test at Super Nova Racing . He did not get a cockpit in the Formula 3000 successor series GP2 .

Instead, Reid left Europe and switched to Inging in the Japanese Formula 3 championship . With a race win and another podium placement, he finished eighth overall. In the winter of 2005/2006 , Reid competed in four A1GP races for the New Zealand team and underlined his potential with two fourth places on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz . The New Zealander then contested his second season in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship for Inging and repeated his eighth place overall with two podium results.

In the A1GP season 2006/2007 he drove 14 races for the New Zealand team, with three wins, two pole positions and six further podium positions and thus significantly on the second overall position of the team, which Matt Halliday used in the remaining eight races , was involved. In 2007/2008 he competed in all 20 races and achieved six podium results, including four race wins, as well as two pole positions, with which the New Zealand team was able to defend its runner-up championship. Later in 2008, Reid entered the North American Indy Lights series for the fifth race . In the second Lexington race, in which he started from pole position , he had a serious mishap, competing for the defeated Integra Motorsports team. During a safety car phase at the end of the race, while in the lead, assuming he was already the winner, he turned into the pit lane before crossing the finish line and only crossed the virtual finish line there when eight cars behind the pace car were already there had done on the line. At the end of the season he took tenth place in the drivers' championship with a pole position. In winter he again contested the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and this time secured third place overall with a racing success and another thirteen podium places. In 2011 he competed in the Australian Porsche Carrera Cup .
