fusion

Today's Sparkasse Märkisches Sauerland Hemer – Menden is a merger of the former Sparkasse Hemer and the former Sparkasse Menden. The merger took effect on September 1, 2009.

In the early summer of 2009, the Stadtsparkasse Hemer began working together with the Sparkasse Menden , as the Mendener Sparkasse had run into financial problems. The reason for losses of around 50 million euros in 2008 and 2009 were, among other things, over 200 building loans to repatriates that could not be repaid. One of the largest risk loans of the then Sparkasse Menden was the granting of a loan to the Society for Security and Defense Technology (GWS) for the purchase of the barracks in Hemer. In June 2009, merger talks between Hemer and Menden finally began.

In order to establish a special purpose association Hemer-Menden as the sponsor of a joint savings bank, a contract was signed, according to which the assets of Sparkasse Menden are transferred to Sparkasse Hemer.

Since the credit risks exceeded the originally assumed 20 million euros, Hemer's mayor Michael Esken only signed the merger agreement after making improvements. Hemer will receive a 75 percent stake in the new savings bank. In 2015, one percentage point should be transferred from Menden to Hemer for every million or part of the credit risks that actually occurred. The Sparkassenverband Westfalen-Lippe took over 32 million euros of the risks.

Michael Esken saw positive aspects for improving the balance sheet in the willingness of the liability insurance company of the former board of directors and board of directors of Sparkasse Menden to negotiate a recourse claim in the millions due to merely " negligent granting" of corporate loans, which finally drove Sparkasse Menden into the abyss.

An out-of-court settlement ended the property dispute of the Sparkasse due to alleged misconduct against former members of the board of directors of the defunct Sparkasse Menden, as their liability insurance settles a partial loss of 3.5 million euros from a coverage of a maximum of 5 million euros. The actual damage is around 32 million euros. With the settlement amount, the presumed damage benefactors were released from further civil law compensation obligations. The criminal law aspects pursued by the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office remain unaffected. Five ex-members of the board of directors of the defunct Sparkasse Menden defend themselves against the impression that with the payment of the liability sum of 3.5 million euros, misconduct on the part of the board of directors was attested.

Former Sparkasse Hemer

Beginnings as "Sparkasse des Amt Hemer"

Since the inhabitants of Hemer had previously been divided between the savings banks in Menden, Iserlohn and Altena , a "Sparkasse des Amtes Hemer " was founded on July 8, 1867 . The first planning began in March of this year. Previously there was only one savings and loan fund in Deilinghofen , which ceased business when the new Amtssparkasse was founded. Business in Oberhemer began on March 2, 1868 under the direction of the businessman Paul Erkenzweig. After the first business year the company had a profit of 57 Thalers , four silver groschen and eight pfennigs . In 1870 the management changed and with it the location. The new office was in Sundwig .

The first surplus interest that the office used for the hospital was generated in 1892 under the direction of Karl Michel, who moved the business premises back to Hauptstrasse. In the same year, the savings bank joined the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Sparkassenverband. In 1895 the cash register was renamed “Amtssparkasse Hemer”. Between 1909 and 1935 the office building, which was replaced by today's “ old office building ”, was the seat of the savings bank.

From the global economic crisis to the "Stadtsparkasse"

Former building of the Amtssparkasse (1935–1948)

In November 1919, the Sparkasse was allowed to conduct securities business. The Hemeraner credit institute also suffered from the global economic crisis, but it was never insolvent. In 1935 they left the old office building and moved into a building in the immediate vicinity. From 1948 the head office was located in what is now the city library. It was not until 1957 that a separate building was inaugurated and moved into at the still current location.

Subsequently, branches were opened in almost all the municipalities of the office. In 1930 there were already “acceptance points” in Ihmert and Evingsen. Main branches were opened: in Deilinghofen 1960, in Ihmert 1962, in Evingsen 1966, in Westig 1967, in Sundwig 1969, in Becke and Niederhemer 1969, in Bredenbruch 1981, and in Oberhemer 1975. The latter was closed again in 1987, and in 1999 the Bredenbruch office closed.

As a result of the local reorganization in 1968, Evingsen left the association. The Amtssparkasse received the new name "Stadtsparkasse Hemer". The headquarters in the city center was rebuilt for the first time in 1963. From 1974, even former apartments were used as business premises. In September 1975 an expansion began, after which the usable area was 4,050 m².

Almost collapse and awards

In 1987 the municipal budget had to transfer several million DM to the savings bank because the bank was on the verge of ruin. The cause was too many unsecured loans, which attacked the equity of the Stadtsparkasse. In the course of the Sparkasse affair, the entire board was dismissed and Mayor Hans Meyer had to resign. Then Wolf Stelling took over the chairmanship and restructured the institute.

For the 125th anniversary in 1992, the Stadtsparkasse established the Foundation for the Promotion of Art and Culture, which among other things financed the city gate. In 2000 the entrance area was rebuilt, whereby glass was used primarily. In November 2008 Dietmar Tacke, who had been a member of the board since 1999, replaced the previous chairman, Wolf Stelling. Thomas Prochmann became a further member of the board.

In 2007 and 2008, Sparkasse Hemer was honored as one of the 50 best savings banks in Germany with the “1Voraus” award. In the Westphalia-Lippe area, the Hemeraner Stadtsparkasse took first place. The Cultural Foundation of the City Savings Bank is 400,000 euros for under the State Garden Show 2010 resulting Jübergturm provide.

Former Sparkasse Menden

On September 14, 1842, the Sparkasse Menden was founded in Menden (Sauerland).

From 1978 to 1981 the Sparkasse head office was built on Papenhausenstrasse. A year later in 1982, the first ATM in the city of Menden was made available by the Sparkasse Menden. In 1990 the main office was rebuilt and advice options outside of normal opening times were created. In addition, the “Börsentreff” was set up in the customer hall, where customers were able to obtain comprehensive information on the subject of securities.

In 1992 the Sparkasse Menden celebrated its 150th anniversary. On this occasion, the “Stiftung der Sparkasse Menden” was set up with a foundation capital of EUR 255,650.

In 2004, in preparation for the renovation of the main office in 2005, an administration building was built next to the main office. From 2005 to 2006 the main office in Menden was modernized. Back office areas moved from the customer hall to the newly constructed administration building. This created space for new, discreet consulting offices for private customer advisors and the real estate sector.
