List of savings banks in Germany

The Stadtsparkasse Hemer was a public savings bank based in Hemer in North Rhine-Westphalia . Their business area was the city of Hemers.

history

Beginnings as "Sparkasse des Amt Hemer"

Since the inhabitants of Hemer had previously been divided between the savings banks in Menden, Iserlohn and Altena, a "Sparkasse des Amtes Hemer " was founded on July 8, 1867 . The first planning began in March of this year. Previously there was only one savings and loan fund in Deilinghofen, which ceased business when the new Amtssparkasse was founded. Business in Oberhemer began on March 2, 1868 under the direction of the businessman Paul Erkenzweig. After the first business year the company had a profit of 57 Thalers , four silver groschen and eight pfennigs . In 1870 the management changed and with it the location. The new office was in Sundwig.

The first surplus interest that the office used for the hospital was generated in 1892 under the direction of Karl Michel, who moved the business premises back to Hauptstrasse. In the same year, the savings bank joined the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Sparkassenverband . In 1895 the cash register was renamed “Amtssparkasse Hemer”. Between 1909 and 1935 the office building, which was replaced by today's “ old office building ”, was the seat of the savings bank.

From the global economic crisis to the "Stadtsparkasse"

Former building of the Amtssparkasse (1935–1948)

In November 1919, the Sparkasse was allowed to conduct securities business. The Hemeraner credit institute also suffered from the subsequent global economic crisis, but it was never insolvent. In 1935 they left the old office building and moved into a building in the immediate vicinity. From 1948 the head office was located in what is now the city library. It was not until 1957 that a separate building was inaugurated and moved into at the still current location.

Subsequently, branches were opened in almost all the municipalities of the office. In 1930 there were already so-called acceptance points in Ihmert and Evingsen. Main branches were opened in Deilinghofen 1960, Ihmert 1962, Evingsen 1966, Westig 1967, Sundwig 1969, Becke and Niederhemer 1969, Bredenbruch 1981, and Oberhemer 1975. The Oberhemer branch was closed again in 1987, and then in 1999 also gave up the office in Bredenbruch. The headquarters in the city center was rebuilt for the first time in 1963.

Due to the local reorganization in 1968 Evingsen left the association and was incorporated into Altena. The Amtssparkasse was given the new name "Stadtsparkasse Hemer" at the same time. From 1974, even former apartments were used as business premises. In September 1975 an expansion began, after which the usable area was 4,050 m².

Almost collapse and awards

In 1987 the municipal budget had to transfer several million DM to the savings bank because the bank was on the verge of ruin. The cause was too many unsecured loans, which attacked the equity of the Stadtsparkasse. In the course of the Sparkasse affair, the entire board was dismissed and Mayor Hans Meyer had to resign. Then Wolf Stelling took over the chairmanship and restructured the institute.

For the 125th anniversary in 1992, the Stadtsparkasse established the Foundation for the Promotion of Art and Culture, which among other things financed the city gate. In 2000 the entrance area was rebuilt, whereby glass was used primarily. In November 2008 Dietmar Tacke, who had been a member of the board since 1999, replaced the previous chairman, Wolf Stelling. Thomas Prochmann became a further member of the board.

In 2007 and 2008, Sparkasse Hemer was honored as one of the 50 best savings banks in Germany with the “1Voraus” award. In the Westphalia-Lippe area, the Hemeraner Stadtsparkasse took first place. The Cultural Foundation of the Stadtsparkasse put 400,000 euros for under the State Garden Show 2010 incurred Jübergturm available.

Merger with Sparkasse Menden

In the early summer of 2009 a merger of the savings banks Hemer and Menden (Sauerland) became more and more apparent. The Sparkasse Menden found itself in acute financial worries and could not survive as an independent institute. Between 2001 and 2003 it mainly enabled repatriates to receive questionable building financing, the lack of which limited the savings bank's equity ratio. When the Mendener Sparkasse was finally unable to grant any more loans, the search for a merger began. On September 1, 2009, the Sparkassen Hemer and Menden merged to form the new Sparkasse Märkisches Sauerland Hemer-Menden . The assets of the Sparkasse Menden were subsequently transferred to Stadtsparkasse Hemer. The city councils of the two municipalities voted unanimously in special sessions on June 30th in favor of the merger agreement and approved it. The Hemeraner Dietmar Tacke takes over the chairmanship of the board, the chairman of the administrative board is the Hemeraner mayor.
