The Sparkasse Menden was a public-law savings bank based in Menden (Sauerland) in the Märkisches Kreis . Their business area was the urban area of Menden. On September 1, 2009, Sparkasse Menden merged with the previous Stadtsparkasse Hemer to form Sparkasse Märkisches Sauerland Hemer-Menden .
The city of Menden (Sauerland) was responsible for the credit institute founded on September 14, 1842.
Emergency fusion
Sparkasse Menden had to merge with Stadtsparkasse Hemer in 2009 in an emergency merger . The reason was 150 failed home loans by repatriates who had brought external credit brokers to the Sparkasse. These were approved although most of the repatriates were unable to operate them and falsified documents were submitted. The public prosecutor's office was investigating Sparkasse employees on suspicion of breach of trust to the detriment of the bank, including the two resigned board members. A total damage of up to 30 million euros was expected. The public prosecutor's office had the savings bank searched twice.
Other problem areas that burdened the Sparkasse were a luxury building area in Menden's city center ("Hönne Island") that was marketed by a Sparkasse subsidiary and deemed to have failed. In addition, Mendener Sparkasse's other loan commitments were also considered critical, and there were also burdens from the general financial crisis and the difficulties facing WestLB .
The Sparkasse Menden had only managed to meet the legal requirements for the balance sheet for 2008 because reserves were released and even the Sparkasse building was sold. As a result, the equity base had shrunk.
