Westig is a district of Hemer in the Sauerland , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Westig was first mentioned in a document in 1200. Westig belonged as an independent municipality from 1841 to 1929 to the office of Hemer in what was then the district of Iserlohn . On August 1, 1929, Hemer, Sundwig , Westig, Landhausen and parts of the municipality of Calle became the new municipality of Hemer. This was granted city rights in 1936 .

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the then independent community had no school. The children went to school in Hemer or Sundwig. In 1805, the first school building was built and moved into, mainly from private donations from citizens. Classes took place here until 1871. In the following years there were sometimes two schools in Westig. Since 1969 there has been teaching in the Diesterweg Community Primary School in Westig.

For decades the district had its own train station. In 1984 the former station building was listed as a monument and has been privately owned since 1985. Local rail passenger transport on the Hemer – Iserlohn line was discontinued in 1989 when a historic steam train ran .

Westig has been the location of the fire and rescue station for the city of Hemer since 1999 . This was previously in the center of Hemer.

The Protestant St. Thomas Church celebrated its 40th anniversary in September 2006. The Catholic church from 1931 is also located in the district. In 1954, the church tower was raised by about 3.5 m to accommodate four bells with a total weight of 5,200 kg. In the course of these renovations, the church also received the white exterior plaster.

In 1896 the Westig Citizens' Rifle Club was founded. With the approval of the royal government in Arnsberg , the club's first shooting festival took place in 1897. The Arnsberg permit was necessary because at that time the local authorities were not allowed to permit a festival for two days.
