As part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert, Ihmerterbach has been part of the town of Hemer in North Rhine-Westphalia since January 1, 1975 . The village is located between Johannistal and Sülberg in the north, Holmecke in the west and Im Hasberg in the southwest.

The first wave of settlement in Ihmerterbach began in the first half of the 18th century. In 1705 there was only one settlement in Ihmerterbach, in 1730 there were already 27 residents. Since then Ihmerterbach has been shaped by industry, several companies in the wire industry have settled there, so that their employees in particular moved to Ihmerterbach. By 1885 the population had risen to 89 inhabitants.
