As part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert, Diekgraben has been part of the town of Hemer in North Rhine-Westphalia since January 1, 1975 .

Diekgraben was first mentioned around 1500, when there were probably two farms in this area southwest of Ihmert. In 1730, 17 residents lived in Diekgraben, in 1885 the number grew to 50. The name Diekgraben originally means Teichgraben , today you can sometimes find the spelling Dieckgraben .
