Stephanopel is a district of the city of Hemer ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and is located in the Iserlohn Heights west of its highest elevation, the Balver Forest .
The name is derived from Stephan Lührmann, who, as a merchant and factory owner, operated a large canvas pale there since it was designated as an industrial park in 1767 . Because of their trade with the Balkans, the merchants knew that some cities with male given names had the suffix pol (from the Greek polis ). "Stephanopolis" became "Stephanopel". Friedrich von Romberg , among others, was involved in the company .
As a Protestant place, Stephanopel often got into border disputes with Balve , also in church terms: The Catholic pastor of Balve is said to have baptized Protestant children in Stephanopel.
A well-known excursion destination in Stephanopel was the “Winterhof” restaurant, the building of which was demolished in May 2007.
