Together with the surrounding buildings, the castle forms the district of Klusenstein.

history

Klusenstein Castle with outbuildings

The hill fort was built in 1353 by Gerhard von Plettenberg , a drosten of Count Engelbert III. built by the marrow . Levold von Northof (1279-1359), the chronicler of Count Engelbrecht III. wrote

In the seluen jair, as the vurs. Greue Engelbrecht auer Meer reysden, Gerit van Plettenbrecht started in afwesen des Greuen dat Slot ind Stat to nyenraide in Suderlande to tymmeren ind oick Slot ten Cluysensteyn.
(In the same year as Count Engelbrecht (Engelbert) traveled over the sea, Gerhard von Plettenberg began to build the castle and the town of Neuenrade in the Sauerland , and also the Klusenstein castle, in the Count's absence .
"

During the feud between Count Engelbert and Count Gottfried IV von Arnsberg , the castle was besieged but could not be conquered. But after Gottfried had sold the county of Arnsberg to the Bishop of Cologne , the castle lost its strategic importance.

The von Werminghausen family lived in the castle until the 17th century . In 1695 the castle was acquired by the Brabeck family. It was acquired by the Löbbecke family in 1812 and the Hoesch company in 1904 . Today it is owned and leased by the Rheinkalk company .

In 1990 various parts of the castle were placed under monument protection. These include the castle house with half-timbered extension and its two cellars, a half-timbered barn, the stable buildings without internal fittings, the utility building (without extensions) and the castle's earthworks and moat. Your castle square was also protected. On the occasion of the 650th anniversary, the castle's half-timbered barn, which was built as a cattle house in 1749/50, was renovated in 2003.

Starting from a cellar, the castle has an emergency exit that has meanwhile been walled up through a chimney in the Great Castle Cave .

Below the castle in the valley of the Hönne , a tributary of the Ruhr , lies the Klusensteiner Mühle . The flora, fauna and important landscape elements of the Hönnetal are protected by the nature reserve of the same name (MK-021).
