Joachim Zeune (* 1952 in Munich ) is a German medieval archaeologist , historian and castle researcher .

Life

After studying art education in Munich and medieval archeology, he did his doctorate in Bamberg on castles in Scotland . From 1987 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Chair for Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times at the University of Bamberg and scientific excavation manager of the DFG major project " Babenburg ".

Zeune is the curator of the European Castle Institute and an honorary member of the Scientific Council of Europa Nostra . Zeune has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Deutsche Burgenvereinigung e. V. as 1st chairman. He runs a private business office for castle research and in this function works for many regional authorities as an expert and appraiser .

Two "sample renovations" by Joachim Zeunes: Hohenfreyberg Castle in the Allgäu ...
... and the north castle in Lichtenstein bei Ebern (Lower Franconia)

In addition to the archaeological research and restoration of numerous castle ruins, the Zeunes Castle Office was also significantly involved in the conception of some "castle history educational trails" and the development of the Ostallgäu-Ausserfern and the Allgäu castle region .

Internationally, the “sample renovation” of Hohenfreyberg Castle in the Allgäu is particularly popular . Zeune is developing a concept to carefully safeguard the original inventory; additions were deliberately avoided here. The measures were accompanied by careful documentation and building research. The difference to a conventional castle renovation is particularly clear in the example of the neighboring Eisenberg Castle, only five minutes' walk away , which was saved from decay with a lot of commitment by an association and the community. Numerous parts of the wall were reconstructed and supplemented here and the silhouette of the ruins smoothed.

The construction of the Haßberge Castle History Trail is also considered to be groundbreaking in expert circles . Numerous information boards provide access to a total of eight castle complexes , some of which have been renovated and explored with the participation of Zeune ( Altenstein Castle, Lichtenstein Castle) . The nature trail was the model for several similar circular routes throughout Central Europe and resulted in the tourist and scientific processing of castle regions such as the Allgäu and the neighboring Ausserfern .

Joachim Zeune has been working closely with designer Andreas Koop since 1997 . As a result of this cooperation, u. a. numerous virtual reconstructions of disappeared or changed castles. The main areas of activity also include the development of didactic catalogs and the conception of museums and exhibitions . However, these activities are occasionally criticized for the inclusion of some controversial theses on castle history.

The office for castle research in Eisenberg (Allgäu) maintains cooperation offices near Bamberg, Kleve and Marburg . The Burgenbüro is currently involved in the conception of the “German Castle Angle” in the Haßberg Mountains.

reception

Zeune is known to the general public primarily through his popular science volume Castles - Symbols of Power (1996). The “new image of the medieval castle” developed there is criticized by Biller and Großmann. They criticize the “neglect of historical methodology in favor of extreme overemphasis on archeology”. In their opinion, the symbolic character of the castle would be "underscored on one side and the overall picture unduly coarsed".
