Bamberg Cathedral Hill

The Babenburg was a fortification on the Bamberg Domberg , from which the city of Bamberg developed and from which the family of the Elder Babenbergs takes its name. The Babenbergs were counts of the Volkfeld , Radenz and Grabfeldgau , who carried the lead name Poppo .

As archaeological excavations have shown, the Bamberg Cathedral Hill was already settled around 600 AD. It is unclear whether the square has been inhabited continuously since the Roman Empire or whether it was repopulated at that time. By the end of the 9th century at the latest, the Babenburg was surrounded by a wall as a regional powerhouse. In 902, the Babenburg was first mentioned in connection with the Babenberg feud . In the middle of the 10th century King Berengar was imprisoned at the Babenburg, which underlines the representation and defense function of the complex. In 1004 the construction of the first cathedral began, the predecessor of today's cathedral. At that time there was still a trench in front of it, which was probably only filled in when today's cathedral was built in the 13th century.
