Poppo von Babenberg (* 986 ; † June 16, 1047 in Trier ) was Archbishop of Trier from 1016 to 1047 .

Life

Poppo was a son of Margrave Leopold I of Austria and his wife Richeza. He was raised in Regensburg . The German King Heinrich II appointed Poppo in 1007 as the first provost of the recently founded diocese of Bamberg .

After Megingod's death in 1015, Emperor Heinrich II appointed Poppo as the new Archbishop of Trier. Archbishop Erkanbald of Mainz then consecrated Poppo. A year later, in 1016, Pope Benedict VIII confirmed Poppo as the new Archbishop of Trier.

In 1018 he owned the mint of the Koblenz royal court, awarded by Heinrich II . It was the beginning of the claim of the Archbishops of Trier as an attribute of their position to determine the shot and grain , weight and fineness of the coins themselves and to coin with their own name and image.

From 1028 to 1030 Poppo traveled to the Holy Land accompanied by the monk Simeon . After returning to Trier, Poppo took care of Simeon, who had let himself be walled into the Porta Nigra . Simeon was after his death on the intercession of Poppos and Eberwin of St. Martin by Pope Benedict IX. canonized. Poppo had a collegiate church built in the Roman city gate and furnished it with rich property.

In the years from 1037 to 1047 Poppo had the Trier Cathedral extended to the west and a crypt built. During a tour of the construction site, Poppo died on June 16, 1047. He was buried in the St. Simeon Abbey in Trier, which he founded. In 1803 he was reburied after St. Gervasius. His tomb is now completely destroyed by the Second World War. His tomb and relics are kept in the parish church of St. Simeon in Trier-West.
