Attractions

The area between Balve and Menden with the Klusenstein Castle near Deilinghofen and countless caves, such as the Balver Höhle (cultural cave) and the Reckenhöhle (stalactite cave), which were formed from the limestone rocks by the Hönne over the millennia, is particularly scenic .

Hönne as a lifeline

Settlement finds on the Hönne can be traced back to the Paleolithic , especially in the area around Balve . Even Germans from the tribe of Sugambri settled this water and used it for their purposes.

Today the quality of the water of the Hönne is so good again that abundant fish stocks allow fishing almost everywhere , especially for salmonids such as brown trout and grayling.

The river offers a special feature in times of little rain, when the Hönne disappears underground, similar to the sinking of the Danube , flows through the limestone caves under the river bed and reappears about two kilometers downstream. The phenomenon could be researched through several experiments with coloring the river water.
