history

middle Ages

Court linden tree in the park "Am Wall"
Model of the city around 1600

From the 11th to the 13th century there were a few farmsteads and a small moated castle in the area. The ore mining already contributed to a positive economic development and thus to an increase in the population. The iron ore was initially processed into small iron goods in around 20  kilns . The Gut Berentrop racing furnace was discovered in a well-preserved condition during excavations.

In 1220, the settlement called Rode , located within today's urban area, was first mentioned in a document. In the same year, the Premonstratensian pen in Berentrop near Neuenrade was mentioned in a document.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Counts of the Mark consolidated their rule in the county against the sovereigns of the area by building castles and towns. This also included Neuenrade, which was built near the border with the county of Arnsberg . In 1353, Gerhard von Plettenberg began to build a castle and an adjacent small fortified town (oppidum). As a planned location, Neuenrade had a chessboard-like floor plan. The first settlers came from the former village of Rode and were forced to settle in Nyenrade .

On July 7, 1355 the place received city rights. Associated with this were municipal jurisdiction, self-government and market law . The city council consisted of eleven councilors and the mayor. The Drosten von Neuenrade, who exercised the high level of jurisdiction , lived in the castle, as evidenced by the old judicial linden tree in the park on the Wall. In 1521 the castle burned down and then fell into disrepair.

Modern times

Neuenrade was a member of the Hanseatic League as an addition to Lüdenscheid . The most important export goods were the local hardware. In the early modern period, cloth production was added, which at times exceeded the importance of iron production. In addition to the Rennöfen were from the 16th century Osemundschmieden built that established the quality Osemund iron. By 1690 there were nine of these forges on site. At this time, trade was mainly carried out with the surrounding towns.

Neuenrade was affected by fires several times, of which at least eleven have been handed down. These setbacks also limited the city's development. In 1660, Neuenrade was known as the “little town”.

In the 19th century, the place was affected by industrial development. Fixed roads into the Lennetal improved the trade connections to the cities there and indirectly brought a connection to the railroad ( Ruhr-Sieg route ). Only in 1912 did the city get its own railway connection with the Hönnetal-Bahn .

In the run-up to the National Socialists' seizure of power , there was a shootout between three Neuenrad SS men and a local communist in August 1932, which resulted in strong tensions. After the seizure of power, communists and social democrats were arrested and the communists from Neuenrad were taken to a prison in Werl . After the NSDAP had consolidated its local power, the associations and groups were brought into line. The gymnastics club and the Neuenrade football club were merged to form the TuS, the traditional society of “recreation” from 1854 was banned in the town. Due to the National Socialist tax policy (which severely sanctioned the Jews), a Jewish family had to sell their property to the community for lack of money and thus lost almost all of their property. The church struggle was particularly striking in Neuenrade. The evangelical pastor Krause, who worked in Neuenrade, was one of the leading figures of the “ German Christians ” and thus, in contrast to the “ Confessing Christians ”, was a supporter of the National Socialists.

After the beginning of the Second World War, the local branch of the Krupp concern expanded in particular in Neuenrade. Forced laborers were used here as elsewhere in the city. During the Second World War there was relatively little damage in Neuenrade. The "Villa Suhr" of the factory owner Heinrich Suhr (* 1869) was destroyed by a heavy bombing. He had founded a musical instrument factory in Neuenrade in 1889, which in the meantime also operated as the "First and oldest Neuenrader harmonica factory founded in 1889". After the bombing on April 7, 1945, the company was not rebuilt and the sales branches in the Netherlands and America were closed.

Neuenrade was the seat of the Neuenrade office for a long time , to which the towns of Dahle , Werdohl and Ohle also belonged. At the end of the 19th century Werdohl became independent and Ohle Plettenberg was affiliated. Dahle was spun off to Altena when the Neuenrade office was dissolved in 1969 . The formerly independent municipality Küntrop from the Office Balve in Arnsberg district was incorporated simultaneously into the new city.

Religions

history

In 1366 the sovereign had a chapel built. Neuenrade remained a branch of the Werdohl parish. Like other towns in County Mark, Neuenrade became Protestant long before 1564 . As part of the Neuenrader church order, the first German-language hymnbook was published in Westphalia in 1564. The Reformed Confession took hold since 1573.

In 1849 the place had 1235 Protestant, 57 Catholic and 15 Jewish inhabitants. The confessional composition changed due to the incorporation of the districts, which formerly belonged to the predominantly Catholic Duchy of Westphalia . In 2005, 39 percent of the population were Catholic and 37 percent were Protestant. 24 percent belonged to another denomination or religious community or were non-denominational. In addition to Protestant and Catholic parishes, there is also a free church. The Muslims in Neuenrade are organized through the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Center Association in Neuenrade and the surrounding area . This association founded the AMGT Ayasofya Mosque by Millî Görüş at its headquarters in Bahnhofstrasse , which was renamed the Mevlana Mosque and will be built at the new Schöntaler Weg location as the new Mevlana Camii ( IGMG ).

Denomination statistics

According to the 2011 census , 35.0% of the population were Protestant , 36.4% Roman Catholic and 28.7% were non-denominational , belonged to another religious community or did not provide any information. Currently (as of June 30, 2020) of the 12,174 residents, 3,829 (31.5%) are Protestant, 3,956 (32.5%) are Roman Catholic and 4,389 (36.1%) are residents of other or no denominations. The number of Protestants and Catholics has therefore decreased in the observed period.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1969, the Neuenrade office, which until then belonged to the Altena district, was dissolved. This happened in the course of the first phase of the regional reform of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was about the communal restructuring of the rural area, among other things through the dissolution of the offices. The municipality of Dahle, which used to belong to the office, came to the city of Altena. At the same time, the municipality Küntrop , which previously belonged to the Balve district ( Arnsberg district ), came to the city of Neuenrade.

The formerly independent communities of Freiheit Affeln, Altenaffeln and Blintrop (with the exception of a few Blintrop parcels) became districts of Neuenrade through incorporation on January 1, 1975 as a result of the second phase of administrative and territorial reform under the Sauerland / Paderborn law .

Population development

Around the year 1800 only about 1,000 people lived in Neuenrade. The population grew slowly at first. In 1900 it was about 2,000, in the 1930s it was 3,000. After the Second World War , many refugees came to Neuenrade. In 1955 there were around 5,000 inhabitants. After the incorporation of Küntrop in 1969 there were 7,500 inhabitants, in 1975 after the municipal reform 10,600, and currently the number is stagnating at around 12,000 inhabitants.

description
Coat of arms of the city of Neuenrade

The titular town of Neuenrade was officially awarded its coat of arms on November 25, 1912. The city coat of arms showed the coat of arms of the Counts von der Mark - the red and white checkerboard beam on a yellow background - with the Virgin Mary above the beam. This coat of arms has been in use since the Middle Ages, as shown by a carving on the pulpit of the town church from the 16th century (today's Protestant church). The image of Mary was originally located above the shield, but it is not known when it was incorporated into the shield. After the city was enlarged in 1975 - the communities Affeln, Altenaffeln and Blintrop from the Balve office were added - the old coat of arms was initially continued. In 1978 efforts began to renew the coat of arms. The Kurkölnian cross was inserted in the base of the shield, representing the communities of the former Balve office , which formerly belonged to Kurköln . On March 23, 1979 the new coat of arms was approved, the design came from Prof. Heinrich Hussmann from Cologne.

Town twinning

  • The city friendship that had existed with Dinxperlo in the Netherlands since 1978 was continued as a city partnership from April 5, 1984 . Dinxperlo has been part of Aalten since January 1, 2005 . The Aalten municipal council and the Neuenrad city council have passed resolutions on the further maintenance and expansion of the partnership.
  • We have had a partnership with the town of Klingenthal in the Saxon Vogtland district since 1990.

Buildings

Between 1220 and 1324 (or around 1600) there was a Premonstratensian canon in Berentrop . After the canons moved out, the monastery was converted into an estate and is now privately owned. Along the way you can visit the private cemetery of the Schniewindt family, the former landowners of Berentrop.

The Catholic parish church of St. Mary's Visitation was built in 1360; at that time, Count Engelbert III. the chapel "Our Lady" donated. Six years later, the place of prayer was elevated to a parish church with a baptismal font and a cemetery was created. In 2001 a carillon was inaugurated on the church tower.

In the Protestant church in Neuenrade there is a pulpit decorated with many wood carvings. The building is classified as a monument.

In the middle of the 13th century, the three-bay Catholic parish church of St. Lambertus was built as a hall church (late Romanesque) in the Affeln district. It houses a Flemish folding altar from around 1500 to 1530. The building was listed on April 23, 1985 as a historical monument.

The Mevlana Mosque Neuenrade is located on Bahnhofstrasse, the plans for the new building project on Schöntaler Weg are well advanced.

The Villa am Wall (formerly Villa Herfeld) is located in the center of the town of Neuenrade and is surrounded by a park-like garden. The building was built in 1903 in the Art Nouveau style and was inhabited by Friedrich and Ida Herfeld. Until 1933, the Herfeld family ran a company that was mainly concerned with the manufacture and sale of wind instruments and accordions. From 1933, production was switched to the Vaterland brand . Friedrich Walter Herfeld (1933–1987) lived with his family in the Villa Herfeld from 1967. In 2000 the city of Neuenrade took over the villa, which was listed on May 31, 2000.

The municipal community elementary school Neuenrade - Burgschule is located in the center of the city between the Protestant church, the Am Wall city park and the town hall. It got its nickname Castle School from a fortified complex ("Auf der alten Borg"), which was located on an island-like square surrounded by a large moat. The former moated castle already existed before the city was founded in 1355. The school building itself consists of an old building from 1912 and several newer extensions.

A city fountain built in 1990 in Neuenrad's old town shows important events in the city's history on eight panels. On the fountain is a figure of Count Engelbert III. Depicted by the Mark , the lender of city rights (1355).

The Quitmannsturm on the Kohlberg serves as a lookout tower . It is 14 meters high, was built in 1893 as a wooden structure and renovated in 1986 as a steel structure.

Protected areas for nature and parks

Court linden tree on the wall

The urban area belongs to the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Areas outside the built-up districts and the scope of a development plan have been designated as landscape protection areas, unless there is a higher protection status such as a nature reserve (NSG). In the urban area only 7 lies ha large nature reserve Klef .

In the city park “Auf dem Wall” there is a 900 year old court linden tree, which is a protected natural monument . This is where court hearings were held and judgments were made in the late Middle Ages. Neuenrade received jurisdiction when it was granted city rights in 1355.

Hiking trails

The Roden-Hennes-Weg is a circular hiking trail around the city. It has a length of 10.5 kilometers. The start and finish point is a car park in Wilhelmshöhe in the west of the city. In addition to the city center, the districts Küntrop, Blintrop, Altenaffeln and Affeln are also circled. The path is named after the oldest Neuenrader mayor Johann Roynleysche. The route is looked after and maintained by the Neuenrader department of the Sauerland Mountain Association.

An educational forest trail with a length of 4.3 kilometers was laid out in 1979 between the Waldstadion and Borke . The aim is to provide information about the local flora and fauna. Plant and tree species, bird species and mushrooms are explained.

In Neuenrade's city park there is a 200-meter-long history trail that was donated to the city by a political party in September 2006 on the occasion of the city's 650th birthday. It consists of 42 bronze panels that were laid on the side of a path around the park. Important dates of German and world history are noted on the plates. It was supplemented by data from the city's history, for example the first documentary mentions of the villages and the city.

Soil monuments

A racing furnace was discovered near Gut Berentrop in 1965 . The kiln made of clay and loam, which dates back to the 13th century, is well preserved and documents the earliest form of iron smelting. The hearth diameter is 50 centimeters with a shaft height of 80 centimeters. However, experts estimate the original shaft height to be even greater. In 1983 a refuge was built to preserve the racing furnace. The technical monument was entered in the soil monument list on April 26, 1985.

Two smaller mounds were discovered in Homert, which may be burial mounds.

In the urban area of Neuenrad there are either wholly or partially protected as a ground monument Landwehren Lanferschlade , Auf dem Kohlberg and Gersberg , in the district of Blintrop a Landwehr between Kuschert and Vierknie. The Landwehr guarded the border of County Mark.

In 1998 the former castle and the Drostensitz were archaeologically examined by Gert von Plettenberg. The complex was the starting point for the city's foundation. Part of the facility and a section of the city wall were exposed. Among other things, a pond-like moat was examined. The earth excavated there was used to fill a wall. In addition to a berm, the core of the complex was a residential tower with a wall thickness of 1.7 meters. The diameter was 9.2 by 8.6 meters. Remains of an outbuilding from the 15th / 16th centuries were also found. Century.

In the village of Gevern near Küntrop, the remains of a moated castle from around 1352/53 can still be seen in the area. The remains of the moated castle were entered in the list of monuments in 1986. The Burgplatz was square with rounded corners. It was 30 to 32 meters in diameter. There was also a moat. The castle was built by the Counts of Arnsberg as protection from the County of Mark. The complex was destroyed in 1353 by Gert von Plettenberg on the orders of Count Engelbert II.

Sports

Neuenrade has a winter sports area with the Kohlberg . In addition, there are three sports halls in Neuenrade, a stadium named “Waldstadion”, an outdoor pool and an indoor pool. The forest stadium has an artificial turf pitch and facilities for athletics, and there are also five tennis courts on the site. The outdoor pool is located in Friedrichstal in the east of Neuenrade and is a warm water outdoor pool. It is equipped with eight competition lanes and a three-meter diving platform, which is why it is used as a competition site by the swimming department of TuS Neuenrade and the DLRG. The last renovation for the time being took place in 2002. The indoor pool, which is open outside the outdoor pool season, is located in Niederheide and has a pool size of 16 1/3 by 8 meters. The swimming departments of TuS Neuenrade and the DLRG use it as a training facility.

TuS Neuenrade is an important sports club . It encompasses many sporting disciplines, including handball, badminton, table tennis, football, cycling, skiing, swimming, tennis and gymnastics. The club was founded in 1862 with a gymnastics department. In 1905 a football club was founded. Both clubs eventually merged. The founding years are immortalized today in the association's coat of arms. The TuS footballers played a good role in Westphalian amateur football from 1971 to 1979, and from 1971 to 1979 they belonged to the Association League, which was the top division in German amateur football at the time.

Sports clubs are also active in the individual districts: SSV Küntrop, SV Affeln 28 and SC Altenaffeln.

The SSV Küntrop was founded on May 22nd, 1965 in the Gasthof Haus Helleckes. However, the SSV was not the first sports club in town. The Küntrop gymnastics club was founded on October 13, 1902, and celebrated its first high point in 1912 with the organization of a district gymnastics festival with 500 members. Originally the drum corps was also part of the gymnastics club; it broke away in the mid-1930s. The association's crisis began in 1935. During the Second World War, the association's life came to a standstill, and resumption of activities after 1945 failed. After the founding of SSV Küntrop in 1965, the first activities in the sport of soccer took place. In 1970 women's gymnastics was added, later gymnastics for men followed. These two departments are still active today.

The SC Altenaffeln was founded on April 20, 1986. The 14 founders were all recreational footballers, but the club was founded as a general sports club (hence the SC). When the ski department was founded on March 13, 1987, the previous members also formed a football department. A year later on January 12, 1988, the gymnastics department followed. In 2008 the association had over 250 members.

Regular events

Every year around March 17th, the Gertrüdchen , a horse, stuff and fair, takes place. The namesake is Saint Gertrude von Nivelles . The tradition of the festival goes back to the year 1355, when Count Engelbert III. With the granting of city rights, Neuenrade also granted the right to organize three annual markets. The regular family and kite festival is at home in the Küntrop district . The Rumo Tripot music festival also takes place in Küntrop every year .

There is a long tradition in archery. Shooting festivals take place every year in Neuenrade, Küntrop, Blintrop and Affeln.

Liqueur specialty

The Buba-Bitter is a herbal liqueur made according to a secret recipe that is only served at the Gertrudenmarkt (Gertrüdchen). The story of this herbal liqueur begins in the 18th century when it was first distilled by Franz Vigelius. The annual liquor serving in the Gertrudenapotheke goes back to a tapping license from 1835. The liqueur was given the name Buba-Bitter by the Buntenbach family of pharmacists.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

Small and medium-sized companies dominate the commercial sector. There are companies for the production of foundry goods, electrical appliances, wire and screw production companies and for the processing of light metal and plastic. Of the 3,541 people who were employed subject to social security contributions in 2002, 2,170 worked in manufacturing. 369 people were employed in commerce and 257 in public and private services. The employees in public administration are not taken into account.

traffic

The next motorway connections are Lüdenscheid on the A 45 and Iserlohn on the A 46 . The federal highway 229 runs through the area of the city .

The Menden – Neuenrade railway line ends in Neuenrade , on which the Hönnetal Railway runs from Unna via Fröndenberg / Ruhr , Menden (Sauerland) and Balve . The “Küntrop” stop and the “Neuenrade” end stop are located in the urban area. Neuenrade station was placed under monument protection on March 27, 2003.

Bus traffic today is mainly ensured by the Märkische Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) and the Busverkehr Ruhr-Sieg (BRS) as well as the Neuenrade citizen bus .

The airfield Werdohl-Küntrop ( ICAO code EDKW), which is operated by Luftsportverein Sauerland, located on the eastern outskirts of the district Küntrop adjacent to the city of Balve. Activities include gliding, powered flight and model flying.

media

The Märkische Zeitungsverlag is the owner of the Süderländer Volksfreundes, which has been published in Neuenrade since the end of the 19th century. The local news is available online on the come-on.de platform. Radio MK can be received terrestrially at 97.2 MHz in Neuenrade and under 99.25 MHz via cable.

Public facilities

The town hall is centrally located in the core town of Neuenrade on the streets Alte Burg, Am Wall and Hinterm Wall. Most of the most important public facilities are located on Niederheide Street: the city library, the auditorium of the municipal secondary school, the youth center, the indoor swimming pool and a sports field. Two other important public facilities in the field of sport are the outdoor pool in Friedrichstal and the Waldstadion.

education

In Neuenrade, in addition to the two primary schools with the Hönnequell school, there is a secondary community school for secondary level I. The school on Niederheide started in the 2011/2012 school year and took over the rooms of the old secondary school. The secondary school will expire in the next school years. It was built in 1969 "Auf der Niederheide" after the elementary school, which was located in the rooms of the castle elementary school, had been closed.

The Free Waldorf Village School is also located in Neuenrade. The school buildings have been on Remmelshagen since July 2002; It was founded in 1997 in Werdohl. The free school based on Waldorf education is supervised by the school supervisory authority of the Arnsberg district government. Since the 2006/2007 school year, the Neuenrade Waldorf Village School has also been run as an open all-day primary school.

public safety

The Neuenrade volunteer fire brigade , which is divided into two fire engines , provides fire protection and general help in the city. The fleet includes 14 emergency vehicles and one vehicle from the youth fire brigade , which are used by approx. 125 active members (including the youth fire brigade). Extinguishing train I ensures fire protection in the core city. The fire fighting train II consists of the Küntrop fire fighting group and the Affeln fire fighting group. A small specialty are the " first responders ", who call out for certain rescue service and emergency operations and provide qualified first aid until the rescue service arrives.

The ambulance service in Neuenrade is covered by the cities of Werdohl and Balve , as Neuenrade does not have its own ambulance station. In Werdohl and Balve there is an ambulance from the Märkischer Kreis ambulance service, from which ambulances and an emergency doctor move out to Neuenrade in the event of an emergency . There is also no hospital, but the next one is in neighboring Werdohl.

A police station can also be found in Neuenrade. This is not manned around the clock, but is manned by an officer during the day. The urban area of Neuenrade is assigned to the Werdohl police station. Since the Neuenrader urban area is a separate district, the police are represented in the town hall with an officer and a company vehicle. Last but not least, this is intended to achieve a police presence, prevention of crime and proximity to the citizen.
