Gut Berentrop in Neuenrade (2007)

The Premonstratensian Abbey of Berentrop was established in the 13th century and in 1356 became a priory of the Scheda monastery . After the Reformation , which was introduced around 1600 , it gradually lost its spiritual importance. From 1630 the monastery was leased to secular people until it was sold to a citizen from Altena in 1806 .

History and Development

The now vacant manor house (2007)

The claim that Berentrop Monastery was founded in the 12th century cannot be documented. The monastery was first mentioned in 1220 in a document from the Flechtdorf monastery . From this it was given to the parish church in Werdohl and transferred to the local rectory with seven hooves as a fief. It later acquired farms in Langenholthausen , Altenaffeln and Affeln as well as a tenth in Neheim . Since 1287 Berentrop had its own Vogt (Conrad von Rüdenberg). In the 13th century the Counts of the Mark stayed in the monastery occasionally.

In the document mentioned, the monastery "Silva Sancte Marie Virginis" or "Marienwalde" or "Bertelindorp" is mentioned. It had a provost as its head. A prior, a sub-prior and a cellararius were subordinate to him. In addition, four priests, two deacons, a sub-deacon, a cleric and five lay brothers are listed.

In 1356 the monastery was converted into a priory of the Scheda monastery. With Prior Sergius von Pöpinghausen, the Reformation entered the monastery around 1615. After the death of Prior Kaspar von Graffen, the monastery lost its independence and from now on was leased to secular people. Thereafter, there was no more Catholic rite service . The church building was made available to the Protestants in 1669.

The economic situation worsened because tenants did not meet their tax obligations and citizens from Neuenrade felled wood in the forests of the monastery without permission. Around 1800 a yarn bleaching shop was set up on the monastery grounds. In 1806 the entire property was sold to Arnold Heinrich Ludwig Schniewindt (1756-1825) from Altena. A fire in 1815 destroyed most of the buildings on the monastery grounds. The owner family built a new main house on the site, which they lived in until the property was sold in 1955. After the sale, the property was used for agriculture. The main building served as a dormitory for male adolescents who were able to complete an apprenticeship in the field of metal construction in the attached, socio-educationally supervised training workshop.

The manor house, which is now vacant, has been partially listed since 2010.
