Galen is the name of an old Westphalian noble family . The Lords of Galen belong to the ancient nobility of County Mark . The ancestral seat of the family that gave the name is Gahlen , today part of the community Schermbeck in the Wesel district . Branches of the sex persist to this day.

history

The family first appears in a document in the period 1138–1146 with Hermann von Galin , the reliable family line begins in 1220 with Rotger von Galen . Until the middle of the 13th century, the Lords of Galen were followers of the Archbishops of Cologne . In 1256 they appeared in Westphalia, often with the first name Rotger, as Burgmanns of the Counts of the Mark near Hamm . Several major lines developed, including at Vellinghausen Castle near Soest (built by Rötger von Galen around 1300 and owned by the family until 1569) and at Ermelinghof (1410 to 1781) in the southern Münsterland such as Assen (moated castle) in Lippborg .

Relatives also settled in Livonia . The branches to Lauzen and in short at Dünaburg from the line to Vellinghausen- Bisping carried the Courland hereditary marshal dignity . A side branch at Boetzelaer Castle near Kleve separated early on and has been named Boetzelaer since 1256 .

Many family members served as knights in the Teutonic Order . From 1551 to 1557 Heinrich von Galen led the order state in Livonia as land master and imperial prince . Another important representative from the Vellinghausen-Bisping line was Christoph Bernhard von Galen (* 1606; † 1678). From 1650 until his death in 1678 he was Prince-Bishop of Münster and promoted the re-Catholicization of the Münsterland. He gave his nephew Franz von Galen the office of treasurer of the Principality of Münster and at the same time donated an entails (with Dinklage ) and a secondary (with Haus Assen near Lippborg ), to which another family entrant came in 1770.

House Assen

Heinrich von Galen , supported by his brother Christoph Bernhard von Galen , the Prince-Bishop of Münster , bought the Assen house in Lippetal in the Soest district from the Ketteler family in 1653 . The prince-bishop wanted to know with his brother a confidante on the southern border of his territory. After the Assen branch of the family died out , Clemens August Graf von Galen (1748–1820) from Dinklage took over the Assen house. From 1850 the castle was the family's second residence next to Dinklage Castle . Matthias Graf von Galen (1800–1878), brother-in-law of the Mainz social bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler , and his wife renovated Haus Assen from scratch and in 1858 built the neo-Gothic palace chapel . Haus Assen remained in the family's possession until 1997 and Dinklage was converted into today's Burg Dinklage Monastery .

In the 18th century the Lords of Galen belonged to the imperial knighthood in the Rhenish knight circle . The line Ermelinghof went out around 1800. The still existing Erbkämmerer line was 1665 in the baron , (Vienna) in 1702 in the Empire graf was charged Prussian count conditions 1,803th

Clemens August Graf von Galen (* 1878; † 1946) was Bishop of Münster from 1933 to 1946 . He was promoted to cardinal in 1946 and beatified in 2005.
