Life

Origin and family

Christoph Heinrich von Galen zu Assen grew up with his siblings in the ancient Westphalian noble family von Galen , which was originally Protestant and later became Catholic . His father Johann Heinrich von Galen (1609–1694) was an hereditary treasurer, official droster in Vechta and a brother of Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard . Christoph's mother was Anna Elisabeth von der Recke zu Steinfurt . He had eight siblings, four girls and the brothers Wilhelm Goswin Anton (1678–1710, Canon in Münster), Heinrich Ludwig , Ferdinand Benedikt and Karl Anton . Franz Wilhelm was his half-brother. Christoph Heinrich married Johanna Elisabeth von Inn- und Knyphausen in 1697 and after her death the Imperial Countess Maria Susanne Eleonore von Saurau. Since this marriage remained without male descendants, this branch of the Galen family died out.

Career and work

In 1676, Christoph Heinrich received a Domnpräbende at Münster Cathedral , which he transferred to his brother Karl Anton on December 13, 1697 after he renounced . It was also owned by the prebende in Osnabrück . In 1680 he first enrolled as a student at the University of Leuven and continued his studies in Paris in 1682. He entered the imperial service and on June 27, 1688 became imperial councilor and chamberlain . In this position he remained until 1727. From December 1697 he had a seat in the Reichshofratskollegium, of which he was temporarily chairman. From 1692 to 1696 he was the envoy of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian to the imperial court. This was a brother-in-law of his half-brother Franz Wilhelm.
