Life

Origin and family

Ferdinand Benedikt von Galen zu Assen grew up with his siblings in the ancient Westphalian noble family von Galen , which in the 16th century partly sympathized with the Reformation and later became Catholic again. His father Johann Heinrich von Galen (1609–1694) was an hereditary treasurer, imperial baron and official droste in Vechta and Wildeshausen and a brother of Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard . Ferdinand's mother was Anna Elisabeth von der Recke zu Steinfurt . He had eight siblings, four girls and the brothers Wilhelm Goswin Anton (1678–1710, Canon in Munster); Heinrich Ludwig , Christoph Heinrich , and Karl Anton . Franz Wilhelm , his half-brother, was officiator in Vechta and Wildeshausen.

Career and work

In the years 1673 and 1674 Ferdinand Benedikt received cathedral praise in Münster and Mainz and in 1683 began studying at the University of Paris. In June 1689 he became provost of the Beckum Collegiate Foundation . With the assumption of office as provost of the collegiate monastery St. Mauritz in Münster in 1702 he had to give up the provost office in Beckum. He took over the office of cathedral scholaster in January 1703 and ran for election in 1706 - in a hopeless position - in the election of the prince-bishop. In 1716 he became the successor to his nephew Wilhelm Ferdinand at the Galen family praise in Minden . Before moving to Mainz in 1719, he was appointed privy councilor before 1709 . Later he worked as a chapter senior in Mainz and in 1726 in the same position at the cathedral in Münster. Here he was also a sub-deacon.
