Karl Anton von Galen zu Assen (born December 18, 1679 in Haus Assen , † September 11, 1752 in Beckum ) was Droste in the office of Bocholt and a privy councilor .

Life

Origin and family

 Numerous prominent and well-known personalities have emerged from the ancient Westphalian  noble family  von Galen , which is one of the most important in the  Duchy of Münster . In the 16th century it partially sympathized with the  Reformation , but later became Catholic again  . Karl Anton von Galen zu Assen was born as the son of  Johann Heinrich von Galen  (1609-1694, treasurer, imperial baron and official in Vechta) and his wife Anna Elisabeth von der Recke zu Steinfurt   and grew up with his seven siblings (four sisters and the Brothers Wilhelm Goswin Anton (1678–1710, Canon in Münster), Christoph HeinrichHeinrich Ludwig and Ferdinand Benedikt ). Franz Wilhelm  was his half-brother. The Münster  prince-bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen  was his uncle. His marriage to Maria Antonia von Wolff-Metternich zu Wehrden , (parents: Hieronymus Leopold Edmund von Wolff-Metternich (1661-1716, councilor in Paderborn) and Anna Antonia Helene von der Horst zu Hellenbroich) was on June 8, 1713.

Career and work

With the first tonsure, Karl Anton was prepared for a clerical office on December 22, 1691. After waiving his brother Christoph Heinrich he received in 1698 a Dompräbende in Munster . He studied in Rome and then in Siena . After he resigned from office in 1713, he married. On April 12, 1714 he was sworn up to the knighthood of Münster . He was appointed to Drosten in the Bocholt office as successor to Carl von Galen on September 4, 1719. His son Franz Arnold was placed at his side on February 27, 1744. This decision was confirmed by the cathedral chapter in August 1744 . His wife was appointed Lady of the Star Cross on April 4, 1729 . After her death in 1747, Karl Anton returned to the clergy and in the same year received the vacant Galen family praise in Münster and Minden and a year later in Osnabrück. He has been appointed to the Real Secret Council .

Others

In 1710 Karl Anton inherited the Assen estate from his brother Christoph Heinrich and was also the founder of the line from Galen to Hündlingshof. In 1715 the Freckenhorst abbess Hedwig Christina von Korff sued Karl Anton before the regional court for payment of the remaining sum of 2 prebends, which his father had donated.
