Menhir of Vardare

Menhir of Vardare

Giovanni Cosi discovered the 1.73 m high menhir of Vardare in 1980 north of Diso in the province of Lecce in southern Apulia (southern Italy).

The dew-shaped menhir with a cross-section of 35 × 28 cm is unique in Salento . It has a weathered surface and three engraved crosses. There is a hole at the top that was probably stuck with a metallic cross that was lost.

The 79 Apulian menhirs are partly geometric and very slender (Casamassima) with heights of up to 4.7 m ( de lu Chiofilu near Martano). Others have anthropomorphic proportions.
