Franz Wilhelm von Galen zu Assen ( baptismal name: Franz Wilhelm Bernhard ; * 1648 in Dinklage ; † January 30, 1716 ibid) was Droste in Vechta and Wildeshausen as well as treasurer in the Principality of Münster .
Life
origin
Numerous prominent and well-known personalities have emerged from the ancient Westphalian noble family von Galen , which is one of the most important in the Duchy of Münster . In the 16th century it partially sympathized with the Reformation , but later became Catholic again .
Franz Wilhelm von Galen zu Assen was born as the son of Johann Heinrich von Galen (November 15, 1609 - September 17, 1694, hereditary chamberlain, imperial baron and official in Vechta, brother of Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen ) and Anna Elisabeth Droste zu Vischering (daughter of the official drosten Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering ). He had two sisters: Margareta (* 1644, ∞ Hermann Matthias von Velen) and Catharina Elisabeth (* 1652, ∞ Bernhard von Büren zu Mengede). After his mother's death, his father married Anna Elisabeth von der Recke zu Steinfurt . From this marriage came eight children, four sisters and the brothers Heinrich Ludwig , Christoph Heinrich , Ferdinand Benedikt and Karl Anton .
Franz Wilhelm married Ursula Helena von Plettenberg zu Lenhausen (* 1654, † 1720), a sister of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg , on July 12, 1671 . The marriage had seven children: Anna Maria, (* 1672, ∞ Franz Anton von Landsberg ), Wilhelm Goswin Anton (* 1678, † 1710), Friedrich Christian , Wilhelm Ferdinand , Francelina (* 1680, ∞ Franz Christoph von Hörde zu Störmede), Elisabeth Antonetta († 1715, Canon in Nottuln) and Maria Theresia († 1727, Stiftsdam in Nottuln, ∞ Franz Otto von Weichs).
Career and work
With the receipt of the tonsure on January 29, 1654, Franz Wilhelm von Galen zu Assen prepared for a clerical office. He studied at the Academy in Douai , having at the 1663 University of Cologne enrolled . In 1672 he was sworn up to the knighthood of Münster . In 1675 he received several offices (Thedinghausen, Wildeshausen, Bederkesa, Langwedel) from his uncle Christoph Bernhard to manage the conquered Swedish Duchy of Bremen .
Franz Wilhelm von Galen zu Assen followed in his father's footsteps and became Droste in the Wildeshausen office in 1676 and later in the Vechta office in 1681 and 1683. He was the tribe and was appointed by his uncle, the prince-bishop , as treasurer . His successor was his son Wilhelm Goswin Anton (* 1678, † 1710). Franz Wilhelm was buried on February 12, 1716 in the parish church in Dinklage. His grave has been in the castle chapel since 1837.
